Im not that well versed, so any with a strong story, preferably made in the 21st century. ive listed those i have seen. Im assuming there's no shojo mecha anime, but if there is, i dont want it.

I've seen:
Eureka 7
Gundam 00 (ive watched seed and destiny, but liked neither)
Macross Frontier
Fullmetal Panic
Code geass

Best mecha anime is from 20th century. Seriously.

If you want to try, I suggest you:
SDF Macross / Macross Plus.
Evangelion

Mecha anime? I don't watch much. Code Geass is the best one out there, but I've also enjoyed these:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Kannazuki no Miko
Godannar
Vandread
Bakuretsu Tenshi

It's pre- 21st century, but Neon Genesis Evangelion is worth watching.

^Listen to these guys

Gunbuster 2 - top notch animation, 6ep
if you like it you may proceed to Gunbuster 1, better story but oldschool animation

also
Gundam 08th Team - abit old
Tekkaman Blade - if you have the time (50-ish episode), oldschool
MAcross Zero - since youve watched frontier. Prequel of SDF

Word!

EternalNightmare covered most of the best but left out the superb Genesis Climber Mospeada.

Those are good and all, but they aren't really mecha...

Anyway, watch Evangelion. After that, Bokurano and Infinite Ryvius (though calling that mecha might be a bit of a stretch, the elements are there, but it's an incredibly small piece of the plot), are good if you want more of the same, otherwise look at shows more along the lines of Gurren Lagann.

It's not really a part of the plot. At all, in fact, it almost focuses more on spaceships than it does mechs. Calling it mecha is sort of like calling, I don't know, Jigoku Shoujo a romance because one or two of the stories contain it. It's there, but if it's an almost completely irrelevant portion, it's really not in that genre, especially when someone is specifically asking for mecha-based anime 😐 .

I would recommend that the requester watches it anyway- it's a great show, it's just really not what's being asked for.

GiTS is debatable. If it is mecha, it's extremely unconventional mecha, which may not be the right thing anyway. Again, still very good.

My favourite would definately be Rahxephon. Although not many people know it, it has one of the best sci-fi stories ever. The overall tragicness and dementia kind of reminds of Evangelion, but still i think this one is better by far.
Other proposals:
Evangelion
Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann
Bokurano(very tragic)
Sousei no Aquarion(I only liked the last few episodes on this though)
Choujikuu Yousai Macross(aka. Robotech)(Although this one is very old i still think it deserves your attention)
