Hahahahahahaha

Yeah, huge problem. Now everyone is going to think the US is subservient to Japan. How utterly terrible.

This is one of those things that doesn't matter, but some people read too much into it.

This is just another example of how every single thing Obama does is being looked at through a microscope.

I bet if Bush bowed to the emperor there would barely be as much talk and "controversy"...

Do you really think no one would notice if Bush bowed? It would just be criticised from the other side of the political spectrum. Between CNN and FOX, presidents can't get away with anything.

On topic, if this were an isolated incident, President Obama bowing to the Emperor of a big ally it's that big a deal. But, as BoxBox pointed out, it isn't a one-time thing or something reserved for Japan. So, perhaps it should be looked at, but personally, I'm going to reserve judgment for now and see wat else happens.

I'd be more surprised if he didn't bow. It's a sign of greeting and respect. If President Obama didn't do that, then that's not being respectful. There's no deeper meaning.

Actually, on a Japanese website, a lot people were complaining that Obama did not bow right and that he was ignorant and they found it offensive. They also called him a number of racial slurs, but that's beside the point.

This thread is so amusing.
The man was trying to be polite, stop whining about it.
Jeez.

Hold on, I think we're missing the real deal here.

Emperor of Japan.

I think we should make a fuss of him trying to please feudal run-off instead of the real man in power.

I'm not saying that no one would notice if Bush bowed. I'm saying that if Bush was the one bowing, it wouldn't be so blown out of proportion as much as this was.

I gotta agree with you on that.

Obama does it again! First in Saudi Arabia and now Japan. Darn it! Can't he control his bowing?! No, actually,** I'm joking**. He was trying to be polite. I can't see how it degrades America in any way, shape, or form, to try to be polite. Even if he bowed wrong.

Though after the game they might end up in the same box but during the game where it counts the both play by diffrent rules.

ummm you can win the battle but not the war? It's the end that matters.

I don't think it's degrading, I just think it is kind of weird how no one else did that but him. Bush never did that. Clinton only did a slight lean and he got criticized for that. All the other presidents never did that. There's no need to do it. The emperor of Japan holds no real power, he's just a figure head. In fact, there's no law or custom on the matter of formality for current Japanese administration on international meetings between leaders. Handshake is the universally accepted thing to do. It's just kind of weird, you know. Maybe he's just nervous and he's trying to be on everyone's good side since he is relatively young and new to the whole political system.

Exactly! That's pretty much it actually. You try to be nice and they take it the wrong way. So it's best just being yourself, neutral, and do what everyone else do. Handshake.

I more or less agree with this. There's this old saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". The Japanese bow to the Emperor, and Obama was in Japan. Japan is more or less the Emperor's "territory". It's good that we have a president who respects the traditions of others. I would think that this, despite the media's prattling, would give the United States a more positive image in the world. It shows that we are beginning to respect others' traditions, which is something we do not have a history towards. Just think about how Americans tour the world and rarely learn the other country's language. It's pitiful.

And apparently, it's not just Americans who have issues. The Japanese should acknowledge the fact that he's trying, unlike previous presidents before him. Plus, he's not Japanese; he doesn't know all the fine details of all their customs. And I would feel that it was the same with the Queen of England. These are not things that Americans are taught and instinctively do. Give the guy some effort for trying.
