I'm from Austria, so I don't really had the chance to mix them up, but in foreign countries( ok, except Australia) some people don't know about it.
For Example when I was in NY once.
A:I'm from Austria.
B:Ah, Australia.
A:No, Austria.
B:Where's Austria?
. .
.

It's not that it angers me or upsets me or anything it's just that I think that people should at least know that it's in Europe. It's like when people hear Wyoming and don't know that it's in the USA.

i dont mistake them, well not anymore, cuz when i was still a kid i did sometimes say Austria while thinking of Australia 🙂

well, in Latvian they're also very similar Austrija for Austria and Austrālija for Australia... 😉 so sometimes some people do mistake them, but rarely as far as i know... 😉

maybe it's because our flag is very similar to Autria's so we know which is which...^^

but most likely its simply because in Latvia we learn about the whole world and know well, lots of things(not trying to sound more cleverer or something but i kinda have this feeling that those big countries usa russia uk france china etc dont know as much as we do, cuz hey, we have to learn ALL the countries in geography so we do know all the countries that there are in this world but they, nope they've got no idea they even exist not even thinking about where they are and what kind of country, take no ill will if i'm wrong but i just have that kind of feeling that majority of people are like that) so yeah, at least latvians do know, most of us anyway, who learn in schools...^^

Nope, never.
Even when I was a kid, I didn't mix them up because when I was a kid, I didn't even know there was a country named Austria. 🤣

No, never.
In my language, they sound different. In my first English lesson, I learned both Austria and Australia.

I didn't even know Austria was a country until I took Geography last year - so I never knew they were two different countries. I know better now, though.

Uh.....Dragonfiremule, your governor is from Austria.......

And no, I don't think I've ever confused the two. My tongue mixes them up occasionally, but my head's got 'em straight. 😛

Never. Besides the fact that I've gone snowboarding every year in Austria for the past 12 years, Austria and Australia sound nothing alike in Dutch.

I have met and spoken to people who didn't seem to know they were two seperate countries.
There's two type of people who mix it up, in my experience.
1st: Kids who have never had any geography or history lessons. (knowing that Austria was occupied by nazi Germany should give plenty of hints to the fact that it is in Europe.)
2nd: Egocentric Americans who are barely concious of the fact that there is actually a world beyond their country's border, besides Mexico and Canada, if at all that. (if you are offended by this, you are one.)
