well i have been wondering for a while but it doesnt make sense no matter how i look at it.

it seems that mangakas dont realize the demand of their work worldwide...if they did they would put up their translated manga on their own site with abundant ads ...they could make a lot of money ....

but NO!!! they rely on publishers like tokyopop who drop series mid way and leave fans disappointed

one of my friend is studying Modern arts at college..and does webcomics(erotic) as a hobby and makes 200-300 $ per month sometimes...though not always...

if he cud make such...popular mangaka would be raking in a ton of cash....!!!!!!!!!!

what do u ppl think 😕

🙄

of course they know of their popularity, but if you are stuck in deadlines you don´t have time to do this. And i don´t think they draw manga to gain money but to do what they love. And even with their normal pubications they make good money

i'm pretty sure that the mangaka does have the same right over there work once its published that your friend does. they probably can't put there work on line on there own because of there Japanese publishers like jump have right to the work first.

Exactly, they'd have to go through the publishers still. And the japanese manga publishers seem to be terrified of any online form of manga

if mangakas sell their mangas to publishers, they'll prob earn more money than if online ones
after all no one wants to read something with ads all over it!

People often overestimate the profitability of ads. Especially in the market where so many people have adblockers. Comparing a few cent/click/100 people versus several dollars of print per person is a no brainer on which one makes more dough. Also, printing books have too much overhead for a single author to handle therefore, a publisher is a necessity. Publishing will then also handle marketing which is often what gives them the popularity.

From writing/drawing alone, some manga authors have claimed that it costs as much as $100,000 US per year to make such quality (most of which goes to assistants & supplies). If you're making 200300/month, you'll be calling bankruptcy very very fast.

Even from a scanlator's point of view, who's work is far lesser than any original work (minus some LQ webcomics...), ads generate barely enough to cover hosting fees or less that even if you take ads off their websites, it won't make much difference. So, unless you're an aggregator like OM/MF/etc who doesn't do that much work due to use of crowd sourcing, ads business model is a very poor one. I would say that your friend who's earing 200+ is doing very good.
