Hi! It would be cool to have more up-to-date gender options for our profiles (:

Currently we can choose between:
• male
• female
• alien
• hermaphrodite

It would be cool to have something like:
• man
• woman
• non binary
customizable option

Also, it would be great to have the option to show our pronouns on our profile and when we post on the forum.

It could be like:
• none displayed
• he/him
• she/her
• they/them
customizable option

Lots of queer people read manga, especially Yuri and Yaoi but also all the other genres, and we would feel more welcome here if these options were available.

Thanks in advance and thanks for a great website!

~

PS: I tried using bbcode to format the lists but it didn't work, is the only bbcode implemented the one shoved abode the post body window?

Thanks! I feel like it's one of those things that was made at the beginning of the website and never really revised so today it feels a bit outdated, but an update would be most welcome.

How about just man or woman?

Let us not cater to mental illness.

pretty sure gender field is save in some database

not all database generous enough to give gender field more than 6 string length resulting in harder time and headache in case of migrate

it will give room for more bugs and exploit also give harder and not accurate data analytic

as for adding pronouns, i kind of think it will just cause people bias and potential lead to off road topic on forum with no real benefit

but i'm no judge and dev team has different perspective

That's a very good suggestion and you were so didatic and civil given how respectfully the options were laid out to us on this democratic site.

(hermaphrodite? Seriously? Are we in 1432? Amidst people who touch grass, the respectful term is intersex, non binary is specific for gender. There's serious tags for both on mangaupdates for those who only manga contact with the subject is futa, yeah I'm looking at you, you uncultured being).

Anyway I believe by now, 2024, year of technology, people can go on google-sensei and read one or two small articles on gender studies so they don't say anything dumb like some of the helpful contributors on the comments...haha, sorry, rambled. It's accumulative crashing down by historical opressive societal erasing.

Great adds up for the edits, blupblupchanton.

I and many others are sick of this cancerous gender pronoun stuff.

I love this website for its functionality, and I see no reason not to make it a comfortable place for people from different walks in life.

I don't know much of anything about programming or designing websites, but I think op isn't asking for all that much. If anyone doesn't need or want other options they don't need to worry about it. We could all be mature adults and just allow others to live their lives. Believe it or not, if you don't like or understand how someone presents themselves on the internet, you are entirely welcome to just not engage with that person. And that goes for all of us.

Anyways, I'm happy to have you here op, and I hope that you can find a comfortable place on the site.

As the person who added those options, I meant for them to be humorous. This was in 2004 when gender issues weren't as well known.

Either way, I added Non-binary and Other because it was easy to do.

Well, it wasn't specifically directed to the you at the time but more to the fact that those terms, today, as a reaction to the increasing awareness built by social movements, are often used by terfs and conservative groups to attack and ostracize us be it online or irl

  • we just had a little taste, dare I say je ne sais quoi of expressions alike by some love-sharing commentators here in this topic showing how these unclear precedents and pressuposed “no pronouns needed” fashion have been setting the tone. (But hey, don't listen to me I'm just a gen z in slippers with no UX work force to add trying to bring some love)

So, I don't know about 20 years ago but nowadays having “alien”, “hermaphrodite” as a deliberated option for other genders are not really funny on the funny jokes book. Sadly, it's the end of humour for non-queer people I guess, now having to live off countryballs, pepe and vtuber memes.

Having said that, I'm glad we have Non-binary now. The site has such a big range of added and updated works, with even the publishers listed. So in the near future, I really hope to feel more at ease chatting and aggregating (pronouns added to our posts and pfs as op suggested would be real cool no matter the time it takes) with my fellow aliens and hermaphrodites about and around queer manga here.

You could just not specify your gender. Nobody really cares.
