Hooray! I hope Yen Press doesn't miss the subtle jokes in Yotsubato! like ADV did.

got volume 1-6 from yen press. the translation seems to be better after discussing one of the more difficult to translate parts with someone who has the ADV version
in volume 1 yotsuba tells fuuka her dad's job (which is "translator") and says the wrong thing
in ADV version she says "train spotter"
in Yen Press she says "trash loader"
more importantly though, the Yen Press version explains the pun as follows by use of an aserisk and comment on the bottom of the page:
"the japanese word for 'translator' is honyakuka. yotsuba mispronouses it as konnyakuya, or "person who makes konnyaku", a kind of jelly, which is what fuuka thinks koiwai-san does for a livingthroughout much of the series"

Thanks Tiamat. 🙂
I'm looking for a secondhand set - and wasn't sure which publisher to go for.
I have a couple of Yen Press books - and they do seem to bend over backwards to keep the translations "authentic" and include translators notes.
Can't say I've ever been particularly impressed with ADV translations.

"Trash loader" won't make any more sense in the context of the other jokes about Koiwai's job than "train spotter". I think they should have just translated it as "tofu maker". It sounds a little like "translator" and a drawing of konnyaku looks enough like a drawing of tofu for them to use it in the konnyaku jokes.
I personally like ADV translations and agree with their changing puns and cultural things. But their Yotsubato translations were getting pretty awful. In the 4th volume they mixed up the names Fuka, Ena, and Asagi too many times to count. And I really didn't like how they stopped doing those translation notes at the end.
I don't care whether they miss some things (I'll emphasize on "some" because I DO care when there's a lot). I'm just happy that Yen Press picks up the things some publisher drop.

yblees: no problem 🙂
btw if you're buying the books online and there is a picture you can tell if it's adv or the yen press version by the font on the cover
the Yen Press books have the title written in yellow all within the green. the ADV books have a white exclamation mark
volume 7 goes on sale in december

I like ADV better because the paper seems a higher quality. I mostly just buy the books to support the series, and never read 'em more than once. (For that I use scanlations).
Yen Press is massively asweome for taking up Yotsubato, especially after it was abandoned for so long. Speaking of which, what's the deal with it in Japan? Judging by the scanlations alone, it seems like the rate-of-release is just way too slow. There've only been three or four chapters in the past six months. It makes me sad.

I've been wondering about it too. I think it's been at "volume 9 ongoing" for a real long time now. Did it go on hiatus or something?
at this rate yen press will catch up in no time...0_0
