Its possible but as on now the little motors used to make them move either don't exist or are not currently accessible to civilians.

Most people investing would want to know what "practical" applications would they be of any use for?

practical?...
1) war, military uses
2) gambling, underground activities
3) entertainment, local to world class
4) environmental friendly transportation
5) emergency responses, rescue operations

probably more practical uses for ATs, it is what it is, things don't always have to adhere strictly to what the characters use it for in the manga. Modern tech isn't at the level yet, but that won't stop people from making better technology. There are uses for everything, depending on the people using it and situation. Anything can be practical given the circumstances.

Oh oh i know what your getting at !!! Like for example:

1) war, military uses - use them in the sand in Iraq
2) gambling, underground activities - play poker while skating, or just bet how long before some1 slips and kills himself
3) entertainment, local to world class - yes! watching dumb people try and skate up a building with motor skates, falling and getting broken bones/ruptured organs would be COOL - also would make lots more job opportunity for lawyers and doctors!
4) environmental friendly transportation - Oh yeah baby! 15 minutes of battery charged FUN - pfft batteries are very environment friendly, dont u dare question it!
5) emergency responses, rescue operations - Yeah !! Like saving hikers, divers and penguins!

I'm not negative, this is constructive criticism.
When you look at my post you should realize we need some better examples...

Run into a major problem with power supply for such a small product that will need to be able to go for at least 30mins to a hour and move the user at about 45mph+. The time limit for operation is what will dictate what the possible applications it can be applied to.

I don't have a lot of time to go through all those pages so idk if its been said already, but i propose a small magnetic motor or something. The way it could work in my head goes two way.

1. The permanent magnets revolve pushing each other indefinite amount of time and that magnetic force also move the wheel or better yet its inside the wheel so it moves

2. The permanent magnets revolve pushing each other for an indefinite amount of time movie a chain somehow and moves the wheel.

think about it

thought about it.

similar to powerball. but we need to consider the mass we put on the magnetic wheels.

Just my two cents, but I dont think its possible to make them quite as compact as they are in the manga mostly because of problems storing enough power to move a human body at high speeds for an extended period of time in something about the size of a pair of roller blades. Just thought I would mention it, but recently a discovery at RPI has made it possible to make a rechargeable "paper" battery. It doesnt recharge that well yet though, but its made using carbon nanotubes, so it might be possible to make the entire AT shoe part (and anything else that doesnt really move) out of the battery itself.

If we relocate the power source to around the ankles and within the AT's themselves, we could probably get enough energy stored up to make that part feasable. The only other problem after that is to get enough power into a tiny motor to move about 30-75 pounds (4 motors per set of AT) at 30+ mph.

http://z3.invisionfree.com/TheAtProject/index.php?act=idx

This is the sorta "official" thread for actually making the AT right?
By the way, no one has to answer that one.

lolz, anyways, there are a few things that might be practical with ATs. We can use them to serve customers on the fly in a restaurant or something. Also, ever heard of AT's dancing? You prolly haven't heard this kind cause it's a mix between ballroom dancing, ballerinas and high speed dangerous fun, lolz.

Going to the forums now

i probably think its possible when you think Rollerblade as a primitive type "air trek",but the complication of the devices and size would be to much problems. Beside having small and delicate devices usually mean alot of dough for just a "part". i think its possible to make one but another thing of mass producing like heck something this complicated can't be easily understand and compare to the manga you can tune it and customize it..heh its possible but its not like some big company funding it so probably 15-35 years to make into prototype or the best of what our technology that we currently have... but its it is possible but impossible comparing to the manga

Has anyone thought of buying those motorized rollerblades the japanese already made and tampering with them? Is that illegal? They look promising and are the closest to air treks anyone has gotten. I'm sure we can make the motors smaller and provide a different method of changing speeds. eyes
