I don't know if people have posted this before, but I found a way to support your favourite mangaka as well as read series that are not being scanlated or completed.
You can buy the digital manga from amazon.co.jp (it's pretty cheap) and read it on your Kindle. I don't have a Kindle but I use the Kindle for PC app. You have to follow a few steps. This is where I went for the info. You need a Japanese mailing address as well as you have to change your Kindle country settings to Japan.
I am enjoying it so far even though I can hardly read Japanese ^_^ I've finished a few series that I was dying to know the ending.

Reviving an almost one year old thread.
Can someone tell me if the 5 book limitation is still in place? (If Amazon JP detects you're not in Japan?)
Would using e-mail Amazon JP gift cards be the best alternative? (If one doesn't even want to use a VPN...?) Because, you just buy the card once.
In fact, I always use the gift card on Amazon.com for my purchases, only because I just didn't really trust Amazon with my card info.
But now, Amazon has gotten better at hiding your info. I can't break away from my gift card habits though.
Either answers to these questions would be greatly appreciative if someone knows something. I've been bouncing forums and got some hope from one of them.

I'm not sure about the 5 book limit on Amazon.co.jp, but if you want a place where you can buy original manga (be it digital or printed versions), there is more places out there. For example honto.jp - not sure about being able to read on "kindle" though. Also, there is no English interface, so you either need to know some Japanese or you should get help from google translate

Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.

^ Oh yeah. Don't worry. I know of other places too. Thank you for suggesting honto.jp, though. ^__^
If it's for physical tankoubon, I normally just go to my two nearest Kinokuniyas (or some other store) to buy them if need be. I've resorted to ordering online a few times, but those were for out of print books.
For mangazines though, I really want to try Amazon first. Using Kindle is the easiest platform to read from rather than pay more and have these mangazines take up space in your room. Ebook Japan is my second choice, which would require their own app, but no number of purchase restrictions. Nico Douga is going to be my third choice (although, tied to a video).
日本語に読みま す。。。 I generally use Rikai-chan (and Excite.co.jp) to help me with certain sentences, if I do get stuck. Otherwise, I'm pretty much fine on Japanese sites and signing up on them. ^__^

I didn't have a 5 book limit (I have more than that). Also I've never had a problem with using my credit card, either.
[Edit] I tried again to buy something and it appears I now need a VPN.
