Hello you,
I was just wondering how much of seinen thats published in japan makes it to the west or to the internet. Anybody have a clue? I always felt that there was much less seinen than shonen, but maybe its just a perception thing.

I guess the amount of seinen that gets scanlated over here is less than half of the shounen we see. There's also only about a handful groups that focus on seinen.

I don't know, but I don't think that there is a lot that actually gets scanlated. It's probably because most people in the west around the age to read seinen don't want to read any "comics".

I'm not sure, but I'd guess about half or a little less than half of seinen. A lot of them are scanlated, but we need people that are actually over there to give us scans so there are more than just a couple series that don't get scanlated. There aren't all that many groups focusing on seinen either. As for shounen, I'd say about slightly lesser than 3/4 of them are scanlated. The one-shots and mini series aren't seen scanlated much, but all the groups doing shounen projects have got most of them covered.

Wow, i find it hard to believe that 3/4 of shonen Manga published in Japan are scanslated. Are you sure about that sakirol? Japan has the biggest comic output in the world and i find it hard to imagine 3/4 of it being scanslated.

You're assuming that Japan puts out about a 1,000 new mangas a day. o.O

Their series aren't growing at that high of a rate. Considering our fandom, it's good to assume that most of the stuff is being scanlated.

I doubt that. There are 749 seinen series in the database. If that were only 2%, then there would be 37450+ seinen series in Japan. Yes, I know that not all of the manga is scanlated, but that's the closest that I can get.

On the other hand, there are 823 shounen listed in the database. So... What do you all think now?

going back to the original question, of those 749 seien manga, how many do you think have been scanlated? certainly a much lower number than those 823.

Seinen magazines have a much more limited distribution than shounen magazines. Even for a well known seinen magazine like IKKI the number of copies distributed per month will only number in the ten thousands. If you look at it from tht perspective, it isn't really so out of proportion.
But this is all speculation. As xeronia says we'd need to look at a japanese database to get a better idea.

Ikki is one of the most alternative magazines there is in seinen.

By alternative you mean obscure? I think it likely that there are quite a few more obscure ones, you've probably just never heard of them. But okay, I suppose I could have chosen a better example.

I'm not bothering to find out how much is being scanlated, because I can only search for those that are completely scanlated. But anyways, I don't believe that there are over 40000 series in Japan.

Anyways, 483 seinen and 502 shounen are completely scanlated. Not a big difference at all.
