Photoshop is just splendid for it.
You just have to remember three simple steps.

-
Open your image in PS and make a duplicate of it as a layer, so that it isn't background-locked (right-click -> duplicate layer...).
-
While having the layer, you want colored, selected -> click on the tab that says "Normal" and select "Multiply" instead. This makes the white color in the image become semi-transparent (which means it will stay white until some other color in a layer underneath is applied).
-
Make a layer that is UNDERNEATH the layer you want colored, and apply wished color. Then The black and grey tones will stay, but the white areas will be affected by the color.
God. I made a .gif about this....lol...

Haha Tumblr has ruined me with reaction images but holy that's perfect. I've honestly used PS for YEARS and I honestly didn't think of that. Now I feel stupid ahhaha.
Thanks for making that gif. It's very useful.

Nevermind that, the reaction smiley-dude made me laugh. Very happy that someone could use this tip. 😀
