Also a little surprising seeing how easily both brothers were put into genjutsu and weren't able to break out without help.

i thought it was interesting to see kabuto pop out of orochimaru's head and cut itachi into half.

I got it the other way, they used an alternative to the traditional method to disrupt genjutsu, one that's only suitable to the Uchiha, but they needed help, Itachi used genjutsu on Sasuke, and Sasuke on Itachi.

I would say they only used one option. Neither really said anything about having no other way out, which is hard to believe considering Itachi's mastery of Genjutsu (Izanagi, anyone?), and the fact that Shikamaru escaped from this very jutsu in part I.

Some think that this proves that Sasuke doesn't have Tsukuyomi (since he would have used it at the same time), and Itachi may have used his to tell something to Sasuke (as he can manipulate time in it).
