Bullied because of manga

I´m an Otaku since many years but i always hid it. But last year a classmate took a manga into school and noone said something bad. So I thought I can tell everyone that I´m an Otaku. But as soon I told them they started bullying me, saying things like I just want a 2D boyfriend and other mean things. I don´t understand why they are doing this. I´m proud of being an Otaku. Why don´t they understand?

Dont worry little sakura, just be youself, I know is hard to be an open otaku, but in my case I manage to find friends that have the same taste as me, if they bully u for that is:
-they not mature enougth
-they truly are not your friends
and over all, they bully at first but after time they will get use to it

For some reason I can only see kids around 13 years of age bullying someone because they like manga. However, I am only speaking from my own experiences, as I have never seen or been bullied for liking manga. The worst I've seen was the kids who read manga actually isolating themselves, therefore making people just ignore them. Are you perhaps around the age of 13? But yeah, just be yourself...Who cares what people think anyway?

Its not a big deal, thats how me and my friends mess around. if someone likes something even a little strange (or says something even a little strange) we bag on them because of it. but then again we're men. lol 🤢

If none of your friends are otakus, why would you bother declaring yourself to be one too? What's the benefit?
Not that there's nothing wrong with telling everyone what you're into, but if you had an idea it might get you into trouble then you should've avoided it.

i wouldn't really get bullied because of it, yes a couple of jokes here and there but it all depends on the friends you decide to tell 🤣
it's not hard to tell who can relate or not, you don't need to tell everyone what your into, you don't need to make small talk with it ether...i've seen too many people do this> that can get you taken the piss out of espeacialy if they have no clue and all they know is "cartoon, yes it must be sonic".
you don't talk to a random girl at your work place about yugioh cards ether (or guy whatever), you just need to learn sociaties superfical ways of thought.
And they may never understand untill they actualy decide to get into it, there is no neutral with those type of people i recon.
just be smart about it

See what I've found about people who aren't into manga/anime or know next to nothing about it is they consider them as cartoons and comics, and that in ignorant peoples mind who know no better, consider liking it as childish. And to them, liking "childish" things at 16 is weird, and a big red target for them hit.
Even I have a difficult time with my friends. I was 15 when I got into manga, and my friends found it odd at first. One of them likes calling me lame, he still does occasionaly but I'm the sort of person who can laugh at myself so it doesn't bother me. I know I'm lame anyway xD
But yeah, it's a target unfortuantly. It's hard at first for sure, but things should ease up after a while.

Well, although you say the people around you are not into anime or manga, how in the world do they even know what the term 'otaku' means? Unless, there's something they're not telling you about...

I think that they will stop once they get used to the idea you're an otaku. If they do not - don't bother with them anymore.
I, personally, have never been bullied about liking manga/anime. Actually most of my friends are from the type that don't read manga and perceive it as extremely childish, yet they never bothered me about that. On the contrary, they think it's cool that I have passion for something, especially if it's not a common interest (here at least) like Japan.

I'm not an otaku, but I still read some manga, and no one really cares. My mom and my sister make fun of me not just for manga, but for reading comics as well. Along with the fact I don't drink coffee or alcohol, it apparently makes me look childish.
Either way, my sister obsesses over disney princesses, so I have collateral.

That's what I was wondering as well. Especially the thing about wanting a 2D boyfriend. Surely someone would have to be familiar with otaku culture to know that.

Don't let it get to you, they'll learn to accept you. If they don't, then they were never your friends, so you should try and find some people who like you for who you are.
