since it looks like he won't win against ricardo.
He could just go one weight class up, a lot of boxer do this anyways. He can win a couple of championship from a couple of weight class.
Starter of Controversy.

but who's to say that there isn't a great champion at Super Featherweight?, it's not like we really know at this point, and though i'm sure he wants to be a world champion, i think he really wants to beat Martinez even more, to avenge Date, ya know?
so yeah, if it's really just the world title he's after, he could just avoid Martinez and go after the other world champion, also we have to remmember Ippo's a very small guy, he might not even be effective in a higher weight, he's only 5'4 if i remember, so i cant just see him traveling through weightclasses like Takamura does, he's a natural FW, so at best he could probably only make it to SFW

Isn't that the essence of shounen though - winning where it's impossible to win? -)

Some of Ippo's matches made it seem like Ippo will lose but he won. Since the match is still far away Ippo might get better? Featherweight was also his natural weight.

Featherweight is his best weight so there's no chance of switching classes. He could switch organizations though. Ricardo's holding the WBC(?) belt so he could go for WBO or some other belt. Or he could wait for Ricardo to retire because I just don't see how Ippo could possibly take him on, even now.

well, realistically he sparred with Ricardo about what 4-5 years ago? and he wasn't exactly young then....so realistically theres a good chance that he'd be past his prime and Ippo could catch him on his decline rather then at his peak
and also Japan only recognizes the WBA and WBC so the WBO and IBF are out the question, so that only leaves him with 1 other choice (assuming Martinez doesn't have that title as well)
but yeah i agree, i think he should just go for the other belt

No. His weight class is the best condition for him, having people like Wally, and Ricardo standing in that weight class. He must beat all those big-shots and get the belt, then move on to the world.

Disagree about Ippo needing to swith weight classes. At the spar, yes, his butt was kicked however the manga shows Ippo evolving as a boxer. At this time, if a match just happened to fall into his lap, I think he would be defeated. Back to what I said, Ippos evolution is still an ongoing process. His mentality is still weak, this latest match should help him to become stronger. Especially since it sounds as tho he will be walking into it as the Champion.
