I think it would be great if when viewing the information page for a manga, it would have a list of maybe 5 titles that are similar to the one you're viewing. Like.. if a person rated the manga 8-10, it would show other series that the person rated from 8-10 as well.

example:
when viewing "Hana Yori Dango", it might say something like:
"People who liked this manga also liked...
Ouran High School Host Club
Perfect Girl Evolution
Fruits Basket
Hana Kimi
Mars"
(that's probably not actually statistically accurate, but it's an example. =P)

I have no idea whether this would be possible or not; it's merely a suggestion.

Also, I'm not sure if this has been suggested before. I searched for it, but it might've been phrased differently.

i like this idea, it'd be quite useful, but i am not so sure that it would always work, since some peoples tastes vary so much and it could go from Senien(sp?) to Yaoi and such.

if it was fine tuned a bit, it might be plausible.

I don't really know how I feel about this. Usually when I see things like this they just give random, popular manga. If it could be done without too much trouble, I wouldn't mind it, but it seems awfully difficult to implement in a useful way.

There is that option to click and find other manga with similar genre's, which is basically what you're asking right? Yana Yori Dango is Romance, School Life, Shoujo and perhaps a few others. You can click in the genre section to find others of the same genre. Though it might be interesting to have a recommendation section that people could post in, like in myanimelist.net, when you look up a manga or anime there's a tab with recommendations from people who have read/watched the same thing and found other similar things worth watching (... reading back that sentence I'm not sure it makes sense...)

For example if you look up Fushigi Yugi many people are going to recommend InuYasha or Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Hachiyou because of similar themes.

But of course that means that people would actually have to post recommendations 😛 You're asking for some sort of automated thing, like on Amazon where they have the 'people who purchased this item also purchased...' I'm alway interested in what other people read, I know tastes are often different but chances are if they've read one thing that you liked you are bounded to find something else similar...

I think it'd work better like "People who read series A also read series B.", going by lists.

if it just went off what series most ppl had when they marked a series, almost all the recommendations would be for naruto, bleach, fruits basket, etc

i agree with dyingatmidnight. you can select the same genre with the manga that you like. list like "people read this will read this" really does not work. for example, i watch/read ouran highschool host club but i don't fancy the other list that you put there - hana yori dango, hanakimi etc. so, yeah. it goes that way. 😎

Basically i've done a lot of thinking about this... and I just can't come up with a really efficient fast way to compare the lists etc of everyone in the database and update it on the fly ... i suppose if i had a dedicated server doing it, i could come up with something that might be useful, but as others have posted here, most simple recommendation functions will just give you what's popular.

The closest thing i have to something like this (which you might find useful), if go to a series page and click on the number links below the "list stats" section, you can see what others rated the series, and also how many items in their list you also have in your list. It's not great but it's a start.

Digging up an oldie, but... How about something similar to Anime-Planet.com?
A system where you simply have to "nominate" series A by the click of a button, to recommend it to people who liked series B.
The more people do this, the more weight a recommendation carries.

How about doing what MangaTemple does? When you request a series to be added, one of the things listed in the form is "similar series" or stuff like that. ;P

You could set up a thing on the page where people can throw in similar series? >_> But it might get a bitttt too large a list. ;;

I dunno. XP I have another idea but I can't quite phrase it so I'll try again tomorrow when I'm not so tired.
