I was recently at the Barnes and Noble manga section and I picked up a random title from their new releases. It was about a girl who got lost on the way to her school and ends up at an academy for future mad scientist. She finds out that all living arrangements are free and the only terms to the staying there is that she tries her best not to be last, if she doesn't she will get sent to detention at a clock tower where the kids never return.

Do you remember what company it was? If so I could find out easily.

Dang...that description sounds really familiar, but nothing's coming to me.
EDIT: Think I found it! Try Hollow Fields, by Madeleine Rosca. It's a Seven Seas title, and I remember hearing about it at a con earlier this year. The author recently won some impressive award for it.
