Kids with money/allowance

Why is it that in many series the kids have $1000's of dollars (in Yen, of course) for allowance? I know factors like cost of living and all that fun stuff needs to be considered, but sometimes it's just ridiculous. For example, a bully will make somebody pay them 30,000 yen (even 300,000 yen sometimes) which turns into over $300 (or over $3000 in the parenthesis), then the kid either pays up or somebody else pays it for them.
Seriously, what chores or whatever would someone have to do to get 100's or 1000's of dollars from their parents each month? Seems more like money made from selling drugs or their ass
I guess working yourself until you jump off your office building does do some good
-No longer do I quote great scholars, the famous, etc. Kids feigning wisdom ruined it.
--I wont type a post like a college report. If you don't read it just for that reason, you don't have to post why your hoity-toity ass refused to. I swear, so many people on this site are so full of themselves. A lot seem to think they always have an "intelligent and/or logical" point or show signs of a superiority complex. They never admit they're wrong. Maybe partially, but excuses abound! :\

what i find strange is that in all the manga i read about college it seems like the norm for the parents to pay for EVERYTHING. from tuition to rent to spending money. even if the characters have part-time jobs, its the parents who take care of the real bills. its practically unheard of for kids to work their way through college or pay for anything. i'm not saying its unrealistic that there are some parents who do this, but not every parent.
and there's also the NEET situation, where parents take of their adult kids who are doing absolutely nothing. and then the kids have the nerve to complain when their allowance is cut off.
so yeah, i don't understand where all the money is coming from and why parents seem to give their kids ridiculous allowances.

It's not far-fetched to have that much money in your wallet though. My family's always been poor, so I can't speak for myself, but my friend's parents paid her to get good grades from grade school to college. She used to get up to $100 for every A on her report card. I guess it's sort of like an investment: Parents expect their kids to repay them back eventually, so they can retire in Peru, or something.

well, I can't say you're wrong... but I'm in this case, my parents are paying for my school, bills, etc... If I want to have some fun with friends or whatever I have to earn the money myself. I know I'm lucky they're able to do this but I could'nt have paid school+appartement+food expenses on my own...
The deal we made with my father was : "When you got a job, you have to pay for a cruise vacation for your mother and I !" ^^

I don't think that it is wrong for parents to help their kids out like this. I would've loved if my mom could've just paid for everything for me. It just struck me as odd that I haven't come across a manga where the kid is paying their own way through school, at least partially. When I was in college I knew so many kids who were doing this. Some were only paying for books (which can still be a lot of money), while others were paying for their apartments, books, and taking out loans for tuition. Sometimes it was because the parents didn't have the money, but other times it was because the parents felt like the student was now an adult, and should have to take care of their own finances. It just makes me wonder is Japan different, or is it that manga just doesn't represent this well

The same reason why the "rich" character is commonly used in stories. Its to make storytelling easier.
Just think about all the cliches in your typical harem story. The trip to the beach. A date with the girl/boyfriend(s). Eating out at family restaurants. The sheer amount of toys/gifts/damages/destroyed property. Etc etc etc. When you're rolling in the dough, who cares about money? Just have daddy or mommy cough up the dough and keep chasing after the main character.
That said, some stories DO portray the "poor kid" fairly well. The problem is the "poor kid" is typically an anti-social, "I'm too busy to be anything more than a depressed bookworm", has-to-be-uplifted-by-the-main-character kind of person. Course there are exceptions, but thats just it. They're exceptions.

Most likely theres got to be one manga like that. Anywho, what I did to reduce the amount of money my parents have to pay for tution is I got on a scholarship. They are very useful, my sister always said the worst they can say is no right?
That only leaves fees and books which my parents were happy to pay, so my only job is to remain on that said scholarship.
I think students who have a set amount of money for a semester has it the hardest because they have to learn how to budget, so don't think everything is so easy for them when you see anyone in college and they have 1 grand in their wallets.
Also, in some countries parents do tend to stop supporting their kidsat at a certain age, however, in my country parents completely stop supporting you after you get a full time job or after your Bachelor's degree.

But if it makes you happy to win on the internet, have at it.

Well, I would have been happy to do that but I can't cause they earn enough (as the laws say) to support me... The thing is there are 4 children in my family and this factor isn't taken into account when they do the maths, so I can't get any scholarship. So I try my best not to be a burden and I'll try my best to repay them properly in the futur 😉

i earned a partial scholarship from my college, but like Mangakou, my mom made too much money for me to qualify for other scholarships and grants to pay for the rest of my school costs.
anyways, i didn't want to debate our RL finances, I was just wondering was manga unrealistic when it came to allowances and paying for college, or was it a reflection of Japanese society. i think @imercenary is right, its just easier for storytelling purposes to have characters who don't have any money problems. unless the story is about the poor kid.
