I put 'I don't Mind'... Why?

Because there are just some I really hate (like the popular ones). But to be honest, there are some bloody brilliant Shoujo manga out there, better than some Josei but they haven't been heard of... much.

If you look for the right Shoujo for you, you'll love it... ;D

Yeah, they should use their resources to keep translating Himitsu instead, or do Shinri Sousakan Aoi.

It does look like the group doing Himitsu is still working on it, just very slowly (based on their comments on their forum). It looks like a cool series! I hope they do more.

What's Shinri Sousakan Aoi like?

What's Shinri Sousakan Aoi like?

A woman police detective solves mysteries using her knowledge of psychology, with the help of two men, one is her colleague, another is a younger guy who's a writer and also her love interest.

I think Kizuna (MOMOCHI Reiko) is also an untranslated good shoujo title. There's no romance but good drama. The story is not like any other - it's about family turning out to be what one didn't expect. I hope more groups do good shoujo titles like that instead of the crappy ones.

Why are we letting people mis-identify all the good shoujo as josei? (I love josei too, but seriously, mature shoujo is still shoujo if it ran in a shoujo magazine!)

You don't know how many times I've had to tell people Nana by Yazawa Ai is shoujo, not josei.

However, off on that same tangent, what was more surprising was finding that Honey and Clover was running in Shoujo Beat here in the States.

It's just a matter of taste. Some people (mostly starry-eyed 12 - 16 year old female teenagers) happen to prefer all that sugar-coated romance. While others might not. And I've come to realize that a majority of the members that make up the shoujo scanlation groups are from that age range....so go figure? >.>

Plus (and I'm being a bit defensive here), as a scanlator myself, I don't feel like I've chosen crappy titles. It's just hard finding people to help get them out.

@hatsumimi99
Sorry, I do know it's hard to get raws and find people to help for groups.

When I was 12 - 16, I never liked sugar-coated romance. But that's just me. I actually didn't start to accept some until I was older. I think the majority of manga romance is sugar-coated, no matter it's shoujo or seinen. The difference is some are slightly better written, and they are sugar-coated in different ways. The problem I have, is not that they are sugar-coated, but is the way they are written. For example, reading the first few pages of Boku wa Kiss de Uso wo Tsuku is enough to make me puke. And I have been reading shoujo manga since the 90's and certainly read some 80's shoujo stuff (all sugar-coated you know).

The "crappy ones" are like what VyvyanWilde described on page 4. Don't they sound really ridiculous? 😐 I don't see the appeal no matter how young the audience is supposed to be.

I think iyakuko did have a point. However, though there is some variety, I believe the majority of shoujo is like what most people here know of, since girls 12 -16 are supposed to like sugar-coated romance.

My theory is that it's just an effect of what was available in English 10-15 years ago. I got into manga through the commercial translations of Ranma and Battle Angel Alita. Then I went through a long period of watching anime, most of which was based on the usual Shounen Jump series. It's only recently that I've started paying much attention to shoujo manga. (This is due to a combination of being bored of the shounen stuff through years of overexposure, having access to Bookoff and finally enough Japanese skill to try reading what I buy there, and reading various people's impassioned rants about how shoujo gets overlooked. Matt Thorn, I'm looking at you.)

If shoujo scanlators are mostly younger, I wouldn't be surprised if it's because lots of people want to scanlate the same kind of stuff that got them into manga in the first place, at least at first. (And if you got into manga a long time ago, there's a good chance it wasn't through shoujo, and if you only got interested in manga after a lot more shoujo started to be professionally translated, there's a decent chance you're somewhat younger.)

I've definitely noticed a lot of scanlators complaining that they want to do some weird, interesting title, but it's too difficult for whoever their normal translator is or it's too difficult to do at a sensible speed.

The other big complaint I've seen (and one that I share) is that it's really difficult to find good information in English to tell you what untranslated authors you might want to check out. (Just 'cause I know marginally enough Japanese to read the manga once I have it doesn't mean I'm fluent enough to read through tons of confusing reviews quickly and easily to figure out what to buy.) I wish more authors on here had bios. Even just "She was popular in the 60s/70s/80s" or "Known for school romance" would be helpful. I've been trying to fill that stuff in when I can, but there are just so many...

Hmm well I chose yes, but its probably I don't mind it. It seems to me that shoujo has become so boringly repetitive, granted there are some amazing shoujo manga-ka's but then there are A LOT of stereotypical shoujo manga-ka's who churn out the same sort of story lines time and time again. Shoujo has simply become very predictable for me with only a few exceptions.

I tend to like shounen better than shoujo, even though I'm a girl. But looking at my lists and the ratings I've given, I don't seem to have a preference for any demographic at all... both shounen and shoujo have their cliches and repetitive storylines. Those are annoying. But I don't hate shoujo, I hate repetitive storylines.

yes, i do think the same.
basically i read shoujo n shounen, josei n seinen, any story that's good and interesting.
i don't mind read shoujo, as long as they have pretty n beautiful artwork, bishies, interesting idea, unique or different storyline. But for me, i think i give better ratings for shounen/seinen rather than shoujo in my lists.

Hate shoujo? That's a laugh and a half.

I could never possibly hate shoujo. I admit that I, like most people in this thread, will get tired and sometimes even annoyed, but I could never hate the genre and give it up completely.

I don't know what to say to those of you who are giving up shoujo. "Don't do it"? We haven't had the same manga experiences, or even if we have, we probably won't have the same reaction. Maybe there's something I'm not seeing in shoujo, but I simply don't think that shoujo is horrible enough to just stop reading entirely.

Hate is a rather strong word don't you think?
I mean, I don't typically read shounen... but its not that I HATE it... I just don't like it. How can I pass judgement on something that just isn't my thing in the first place? 😔

I hate shoujo with all my heart. Is pure crap. They should consider to write better stuff in the shoujo genre.

daniyagami, i highly doubt you actually hate it... you most likely just simply dislike it.

No i don't hate or dislike shoujo, i just dislike the "ohsoromantic" romance that tends to plague the shoujo genre. I enjoy the realistic romance though.

I don't really hate it, I just don't like how some girls in Shoujo are portrayed as dumb love struck idiots. I rather read something more Shounen/Senien based. I still read it on occasions though.
