The September issue of Kadokawa's Asuka magazine published the final chapter of Tomo Takabayashi and Temari Matsumoto's Kyo Kara Maoh! manga on Saturday. The manga's 21st and final compiled book volume is slated to ship on October 26. The manga will have a side story set after the manga's main story this fall.

The story of the original novels revolves around Yuri Shibuya, who was sent to a fantasy world after being dunked in a toilet. There, he is told that he is destined to be the next demon king, as his hair and eyes are black. Although Yuri is quite the believer in peace and is against violence, the country he has arrived in is on the brink of war.

The manga is based on the Maru-Ma light novel series, also written by Takabayashi with art by Matsumoto. The novel series has spawned 22 volumes composed of the main story as well as side stories. The series launched in 2000.

Takabayashi and Matsumoto launched the manga in Asuka in 2005. Kadokawa published the manga's 20th compiled book volume last September. Tokyopop previously published seven volumes of the manga before it closed its North American publishing division. The series also spawned a 78-episode television anime in 2004. Geneon Entertainment Inc. licensed the anime, and released it until it ceased all business in North America. Funimation rescued the license and distributed the anime once again in North America, although the company's license for the series expired in 2011.

The original novels have also inspired an OVA series, two PlayStation 2 games, a PC game, and several stage plays.
