Would someone explain the entire thing to me? And please don't just give links to the wiki page. Explain.

final=last
fantasy=fake/fictional/imagination
but srsly, its just about a person saving the world. >.>
Every final fantasy has a unique story and background to it. So it'll be hard to explain the entire thing.
You may have forgotten that wiki's actually do explain.
Short Summary: When the developers made it they thought it would be the final work. But against their expectations, it became the signature work of the company.
That's where the "ファイナル" (Final) comes from.
ファンタシー(Fantasy) is because...it's a fantasy RPG
@Spearsmen. The OP know English. He wants to know why it's called Final Fantasy in the first place.
You should read the wiki page if you know Japanese. My summary was extremely short.
Edit: It also says that the Final was meant to mean Ultimate, however, there's no citation for that.
Goes into more detail about the abbreviation FF.
Forgot to mention: It says that Square was in a slump, which is why they thought it would be their final work.
You should try learning Japanese. Japanese wikipedia pages are very in-depth.

They are not related, all cast, background, battle systems, stories for each series stands alone, except for FF X and X-2 which are connected.
They do have some thing in common, chocobos and some magic and summon are used over and over, some monster do make repeated appearance (Ultima weapon, omega weapon, etc)
I think what relates them is more the common theme used in these series, which are in my opinion are :
- RPG based games
- A small party of character adventures saving the world from destruction
- same developer (obviously)
so it's not like trilogy or something, unlike the lord of the ring trilogy which shares the same cast and these stories connect from one to the next. Final fantasy is not it, once again stands alone, so each installment will give unique stories and gameplays. And i doubt they all share the same universe also, since all games have unique and different background, no connection of one to the others.
Need a loving and lovely tsundere wife, anyone interested? >.<
On second thought yandere would also be fine.... O.O

They're not, they just share similar aesthetics and such.
Unless you believe in the theory that they're all connected parallel universes.

Final Fantasy is basically a series of game by Square Enix. There are currently 14 Final Fantasy games in total, not including their respective sequels and spin offs, however all of them have different settings, characters plots etc. They do, however, contain common recurring themes that run throughout the entire series such as chocobos, crystals, summons, moogles and even a character called Cid
Cid is a good example of how each game in the final fantasy series is different. For example, in most of the Final Fantasy games he is an ally to your party and specialises in technology, however Final Fantasy XII was the first game, in the series, to portray him as a villain. Furthermore, some of the games are online games such as Final Fantasy XI and XIV
So you can say they relate to each other because they are from the same pubilsher but all of them have different plots, characters etc. Some do have spin-offs, for example the movie Advent Children, is a sequel to Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core, an entriely seperate game played on the PSP, is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII.

well, i am not a fan of FF and barely played the series, but some thing i have understood. The plot of game is mostly made of stampes (and some of them are widely used in anime\manga), but u can't tell what the NEXT stamp will be, so players feel intrigue, even though FF presents nothing new. The gameplay is simple - u don't need any skill to win monsters (no need to aim even - one button style fight). U can feel uneasy only choosing what skills to learn and what companions should fight with u. The strong side of game is picture, it is stylish and shining (very beautiful - believe me). Originally the game was not very linear (FF7 for a example): it contained many side quests, "additional" bosses and so on; but the FF13 turned out to be the opposite. There is opinion, that people, playing FF, bear rather monotonous and boring figths to enjoy a beautifull cut-scene afterwards.

Yeah, I like Dissidia, so that's what I believe.

Just play it! It's awesome (well from FF7, FF1-6 are a bit mediocre imho.) No amount of explanation can explain the eccense of FF.
EDIT: I wish I had a like button for the comment by Graydrak (3rd below this)!
The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.
kinda irony that the term "Final" just lose it own meaning, it should be Final, yet come another sequel, albeit with different story & chars 😀

The only common things I've come across from the games are Crystals and the theme Human Vs Nature. (I don't think the chocobos are present in all games
This is found even in the first FF movie where people were upset over because Cloud wasn't in it.
I've never thought FF was just about summons and chocobo or some name they reused like every single time. The presense of the crystals as pure and representative of different aspects of life and the overall theme that humanity is in conflict with nature/natural (usually due to ignorance or misunderstandings) but we can also overcome those conflicts and be in harmony with it.
Because that's my take on the FF name I've not had problems with the main series and the movies. The story, characters, and the game mechanics may change, but these core things remain. Spirits within wasn't bad, it was just misunderstood. 😐
Whether people agree or not it's of little consequence, we're bound to disagree and misunderstand each other. It's in our nature, but it does not control our future.

Well yes ,to a certain extent, because each new game has new characters however many of the games in the final fantasy series do have spin-offs. Furthermore, some games have post-game contents and you can always play the game again.
