A couple of weeks ago, we did this poll but for manga. Does it make a difference if you're reading something without pictures? I own a Kindle Paperwhite from 2011, and it works great! Light and contains tons of books. And no need to worry about sweaty hands damaging the pages.

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Where do you usually buy your physical manga?
Choices:
New from online retailer (Amazon, Right Stuf, etc) - votes: 604 (24.7%)
Used from online retailer (Ebay, etc) - votes: 84 (3.4%)
New from local retailer or book store - votes: 616 (25.2%)
Used from local retailer or book store - votes: 99 (4%)
I don't buy physical manga - votes: 1045 (42.7%)
There were 2448 total votes.
The poll ended: July 29th, 2023 4:21pm PDT

A rising number of us don't read physical manga. Myself included, actually...

Still digital but actually audiobook. If there is an audiobook then there is a 99,9% chance that this will be my option.

Forgot: "Full cast" audiobooks are da bomb. All 6 Dune novels got those for example.

Digital, it's easier to store, easier to search, easier to hold mmm...
And with smartphone, it's easier to read while pooping and taking a walk or doing treadmill mmm...

I have a Kobo eReader. I much prefer paper and if the book is a favourite, I'll buy a physical copy, but the accessibility of ebooks is amazing, especially with websites like Project Gutenburg and growing numbers of ebooks in libraries. When I was reading only physical books, I tended to do a lot of re-reading of books I already owned, but now I read mostly new books and a ton of them.

I also like audiobooks, but I only listen to them when doing something else. If I'm going to sit down with a book it will be physical or my ereader.

This might become a tight competition. But honestly, when it comes to novels or other books, I still prefer the printed ones. Of course this doesn't include tankobon comics/manga, right?

When I was a student, I prefer to scratch my notes using pens, or highlight important parts using pencil or highlighter than using a stylus pen.

My eyes are tired seeing the screen all day at work. I need some printed copy if I have to read long texts for entertainment. 🤣

While I am here. English audiobook adaptations of light novels are a thing now. A clearly growing field. Japan is of course plastered with them. Anime´s questionable 2 decade long obsession with LNs ain't stopping any time soon so expect these to be part of forum conversations soon enough due to how incompletely adapted many LN anime are. No one reads anymore but listening to books on tape while level grinding, comminuting and so on is mainstream. It´s how most podcasts are consumed. 86 (Novel)´s anime, it´s alright but good mech/military anime is near nonexistent rn so I won´t complain, ends with Vol 3 and is all but guaranteed to never continue. The audiobook is now on Vol 5 for example.

Fan readings of official or fan translations on YT also continue to creep up and not just in English.

Edit: I found pirated audiobooks for 86 and Spice and Wolf on the first try on YT. Lol.

Used to be physical for everything (novels, manga, comics, etc). I used to love the tactile qualities of real books, but lack of space to store stuff and deteriorating eye sight have made me switch to digital. Being able to increase font size and basically carry a library of books in my ipad has been a great boon. Unfortunately, the Amazon bean counters have destroyed the comixology experience for me and their latest scams of "buy lots a books to get 3 measly dollars off" schtick has soured me on kindle. I may go back to buying select comics in trade paperbacks and look to other sources for digital books as a result.

I've always preferred physical books. Listening to audio for too long irritates my ears, and if the narrator speaks with different speed or intonation to how I would say it (or I just don't like their voice) then I won't enjoy it. I don't much like reading books online either. The bright screen leaves me with eyes watering and a headache.

I used to read some books on my Kindle - it isn't as satisfying as paper. The Kindle is doesn't work so well now, I won't cough up for a new one and of course, a paper book never runs out of battery. I like to feel the pages, see the different fonts and the colour and thickness of the paper. And it's nice to have the spines lined up on my shelf.

Space is the sole concern. My shelves are filling up so the books are stacked on my desk, although I do make the most of libraries. Buying e-books still feels like a waste of money, though. I only read them if they're free: old books on Project Gutenberg or the internet archive.

Digital, since I can easily stop reading whenever, instead of having to finish a page. That and there are no downsides. It's superior in any conceivable way from a pure reading perspective.

Also, anyone I introduced to digital eventually stopped insisting on how real books are just better for reading and instead started favoring to read digital if possible.

The problem is that digital has no value, so I wouldn't pay money for it. There needs to be a physical token of ownership that can be resold and that is missing with digital.

Physical. Don't get me wrong, reading on my phone is convenient. But there have already been a couple of ebooks that have had story content changed (Amazon even deleted a book from all their Kindle devices that had said book downloaded, so yes, Amazon can and will change your library if they deem fit, and in one case for many people, already has). I don't trust Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc. to leave things they don't like alone.

For modern books, I prefer to have it in digital format cuz I just can't keep everything. I collect physical copies of manga, video games, movies, and vintage books/magazines. So for modern books, I don't mind having that in digital format, as much as I dislike it.

Digital is better for novels & memoirs, and physical is often better for instructive or illustrated nonfiction.

e.g. oversized art books, sewing guides with patterns, health manual with exercises, recipe books, gardening books.

The way elements on a page are displayed on digital devices varies, and in my experience pdfs aren't a very neat solution either...
So if I'm going to be looking at pages for a long time without flipping, physical has strong advantages.

Digital has hyperlinking & is easier to copy from, a physical book is unchanging/specialized, either form can be practical or impractical.
