Very simple suggestion:

Expand the "Likes (From Public Lists Only)" category in peoples account info to include more genres (5-10?).
I just suddenly felt that only 3 genres is a bit sparse when checking what people like.

I agree. With just three likes it makes people seem like they only like those three genres, or at least that they are very close-minded, and that is usually not the case.

Yes! Hopefully that would be quite simple to implement too.

I completely agree with you. It would be nice with more likes displayed...

And I also wondered if the wishlist should should count in the likes feature, since those series technically haven't been read yet. But on the other hand, it still shows a persons genre tendencies, I know (and I also know that you can remove it if you want to, but gah - still!).

My question is, why only three in the first place? What's the point of three? To keep it simple? It might as well only show one, for all that helps. Oriolidae, as far as the wishlist goes, if you make it private, the series wouldn't be counted. (Since the 'Likes' are only drawn from the public lists)

Oriolidae, as far as the wishlist goes, if you make it private, the series wouldn't be counted. (Since the 'Likes' are only drawn from the public lists) It works, but then you have to hide those lists when you might want others to be able to see them... Using myself as an example, I like to have all my lists public, but then my liked genres are wrong since I have tons of series on my blacklists, which tend to have different genres... (If I hide the lists that I don't want to count, my liked genres are seinen, comedy, shounen; if I have all my lists public, my liked genres are shoujo, romance, comedy.)

Quote from PhoenixFort

My question is, why only three in the first place? I think the main reason is just because "top three" is simple and common--you know, like gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Honestly, I think it'd be better just to let the users pick three.

Because of the way genre labels are applied, drama, romance, and comedy clog up most of the lists of those who have read more, even if their preference is primarily for something different. So many series secure those subgenres that the numbers are just overwhelming.

I'd also argue that demographics shouldn't be included in the calculation, but that's a problem for another day.

To Crenshinibon: As far as your second point, I'm in complete agreement. I have a several hundred mangas on my list, and, indeed, the three you specified are the ones that appear, for the reasons you mentioned. However, your first point seems went over my head. What's the point of people choosing genres? To me, It seems the main point of it was to see how much you have in each genre. As for choosing three, I can only assume that you're suggesting that so other people can see them, as I would figure people know what things they like the most, and feel no need to write them down. If so, why bother? It's not like only three genre's is particularly usefull, unless you have a very narrow intrest range.

Addendum to lynira: As for your problem with the lists, I have to admit, I don't quite get it. Either you want them counted or not. Whether people see them shouldn't make a difference, unless you want people to see manga that you aren't reading or interested in reading, in which case I'm unsure of why you would have them in a list in the first place. (I have to note that I have a very definite personality, so to me, keeping a list full of manga's I have no interest in seems pointless. You may, of course, disagree.) Your first response is why your second doesn't cut it. Becuase it only shows the top three, you get fairly inaccurate information. Besides, see what I just wrote above about why I would use it. (In specific, to see how much of each genre I'm reading.)

I get what you're saying, but my impression of those genre likes has always been that they're for the benefit of others. You don't show any if you don't have public lists, after all. I just figured it was a quick and dirty summary of your tastes so people could sort through your lists and potentially find an interesting title or two.

Besides, I know what I like. Why would I need something to calculate my taste for me? That seems to serve no useful purpose.

You make a good point about them being for other people because 'Like' only uses public lists, but I still think almost everyone would never bother to check it to see what other people like. Again, only three catagories isn't to useful to show what you like, so as far as showing what you like to other people, they're still not too useful. It would be good, perhaps, if there were three separate 'Likes' Public, Private, and Combined. As for your second point, I'm not sure what you mean. All I said was that I'd like to be able to see how much I'm reading in each genre, not to calculate, but just out of interest. For fun. I never meant to imply that I thought 'Like' was actually useful for something. If anyone wants to say that it is useful, please state a specific situation where you did find it useful, and note that I not going to change mymind unless it's only a rare situation. If it's just once a lifetime, forget it.

What one likes and what one reads might be two completely different things.
So, if someone likes what you like, he/she may look at your lists but may be put off by what you actually read.

That's why I think it's better to calculate rather than choose one's most read genres.

Toto, what you said doesn't work for me, becuase I don't read something I don't want to read. Also, you could just sort what you like to read and what you don't into two separate lists and hide one.

Well, from a theoretical standpoint, that's what ratings are for. But from a more literal standpoint, how is a generic genre calculation like "drama/romance/comedy" even remotely helpful to someone looking for recommendations? If everyone's is essentially the same then there's no way to discern whether or not taste is compatible with that alone. If something like "mystery" was listed instead, or at list had a fighting chance to be listed (as most mysteries will hit the drama tag, bare minimum) it would be easier to get a general idea of compatibility.

Naturally, there are going to be some members with disparity between their choices and their list (even though, with everything public, that seems like a bizarre way to go about doing things) but I think overall the switch would be more beneficial than confusing, as that feature would have the potential to become more useful than it is.

Unless I'm totally misunderstanding the original reason for its implementation?

@Phoenix: Seeing it "for fun" is all well and good, but I don't understand why someone would spend a few hours coding for that. The public/private/combined thing makes no sense either because the point of privatizing lists is removing that information from the public.

I'm not saying that they should do it, only that it would be nice. As for how long it would take, I have no idea, but since they already have a multiple "Like' setup, I can't say that I think it would take that long. As for 'public/private/combined' my assumtion was that the ''private/combined' ones could only be seen by the user, although I have no idea if this is possible according to the current set up. Even if it can't be made private, I quote (from myself):

You make a good point about them being for other people because 'Like' only uses public lists, but I still think almost everyone would never bother to check it to see what other people like.

I completely agree with what you said to Toto, though.

There's a whole section of the forum for that. So, I see no point using it for "recommendations".

What is more useful for finding possible series from another user without their express consent is to use the "List Stats" from a particularly good series according to your tastes.

Anyway, make your own thread for the suggestion, as this is for RilleL's... just make sure it hasn't been suggested already.
