what's up with pitiful protagonist?

There are a lot of mangas with protagonist (mostly guys) that are pitiful. I can't see the appeal in them if they aren't going to get stronger down the line or something. for example, though I don't remember the name of the series it was about a guy who was really pitiful. He lived on his own and he was a coward, short, and weak. Then along came these two freaking hot girls that were really strong and awesome. So, throughout the part of the manga that I could stand to read, he was just there for really annoying comedy that remind the readers that they were reading a manga about a pitiful excuse for human scum. It was kinda reminiscent of angel burst but it was really annoying. I only read it hoping he would get stronger or more brave but he just remained the same.
So could someone explain to me the appeal of these types of characters. 😔

I have no idea.
I extremely hate these characters. It may be because im a girl and i like it when the guy is hot, rich smart... you know the drill LOL
what i hate more than these characters are the 'two hot girls with him' cause really!
if your hot, smart, cool, why are you with a wimp! '
sorry for my little rant...
Wonders How To Post A Picture
It's a staple of the harem genre really. The pathetic, socially inept ordinary guy has a bunch of unbelievably amazing girls just fall into his lap. It's the absolute dream of every loser-style otaku... and there's a lot of those. Therefore, huge market.
Basically, it feeds on the insecurity of your average loser guy too wimpy to take hold of his own life. Granted sometimes the idea works. I've seen a COUPLE of funny mangas with a loser protagonist, but... well, they're really the exception.
Granted, I have the same opinion of your typical shoujo where your average looking dumb girl bags herself an uber prince. It can work I guess, but it has to be done reaaaaaaaally well.

I don't read much shoujo, but from the ones i have read all I can say is that the shoujo manga world is on some kind of godly standard. The main girl can be super cute or hot and yet she's somehow an outcast or pitiful and is treated that way by the other characters.

+1
But guy...
Even if they're supposed to reflect on the "average loser guy too wimpy to take hold of his own life" so that they can relate to the character, wouldn't they be happier imagining themselves to be godly rather than "average loser guy too wimpy to take hold of his own life" 😕

The fact that they're weak isn't the problem with me, what really bothers me is when the main character doesn't change, they just stay wimpy or dumb, and that pisses me off. Maybe it's because I like character development.
P.S.
Dumb, ditsy girl protagonist are what I hate the most, they have a hot, rich, talented guy/s falling all over them, I can't help but think "You don't deserve him or them". That is when I really enjoy the bullying they receive.

I read article aobut this some time ago where editors was saying pretty much the same. They accussed mangakas for not take their time to come up with good male characters just some standard loser and focus only on female leads or so.
Edit:

That'd be much appreciated, if I can come to understand better, maybe it won't piss me off so much. 😎

this kinda isn't relevant but.. PAHAHAHAHAHAHA! xDD i love you.
thing which I notice that these kind of male protagonist are less likely to be found in manhwa.

I agree you don't find them there, some times a manhwa will come close but the MC still retains his man-hood. One, manhwa's MC that I'm reading about right now is leaning towards the pathetic male that pales in comparison to the hot, strong, awesome girl characters he is surrounded by. I hope he doesn't end up in that role, if he does I'll have to stop reading. the manhwa I'm referring to is Girl the Wild's, it's fairly new though, so there are still many possibilities.
