I think do nothing is the best option, if my best friend and I liked the same guy, then I would support her, as she would support me and we would continue on with our friendship, often if you like the same guy, you can have allot to giggle over about him, like how he gets a twitchy eye when you mention the word rabbit (btw I don't now anyone who does that.)

A proper, relationship relies on mutual true, respect and understanding in the other person. I would not give up the relationship I have with my best friend, for a guy who I may never come to really truly trust, respect and understand. If I did trust, respect and understand him, then I would respect his decision on who to go out with. If I am going to waste my time with my friend, another girl who is far less worthy than my friend may snatch him away.

A buddy of mine and I used to go to clubs and hit on the same girl to see who gets her. It's a bit of a game of ours and we'll say horrible, untrue things about each other. Friends come and go

I'm pretty sure the saying goes the other way around, What if i had know the guy all my life and i just met some random girl that i got a shot on but he has a big crush on her? If it makes me beta to step back, then call me what you want, i love my friends, other wise we wouldn't be friends.
If your friend and you had fun that way then that is terrific, but that doesn't mind that is the solution for everybody.
