How's school life in America?

These questions have pretty much been covered already, but I'd like to answer anyway.
Background information: I went to school in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex area in Texas. My graduating class had about 1000 or so, and that was with people having dropped out or failed the grade. I went to school with many different cultural backgrounds, including Europeans, Asians, and etc. I was often involved in a various number of sports (both in and out of school), clubs, and upper level classes. Please base my answers on this information.

Is it really that interesting like it shown on tv?
TV misconstrues about everything possible in life. When you watch television, please realize that this never, ever really interprets actual reality - even if it says it's based off of a true story.
Quote from samsters24
Is it true that the students are divided into groups like nerds, preps or jocks thing?
In a way, yes, of course. I, myself, never fit into any one crowd - I either sat with my classmates, people from my clubs, from my miscellaneous out-of-school activities...or whomever I felt like chewing on a sandwich next to. I never saw any defined lines governing each clique, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist. A jock has a very high possibility of being a computer nerd, so the lines cross very easily.
Quote from samsters24
Is there really a cool popular thing system? You really not allowed to talk to cool popular kids unless you're popular too? How can you become a popular kid in US school?
Ah, there's somewhat of a system, but it definitely isn't distinct where I went to school. I always knew the "popular" kids because they were in my classes. Popularity just depended on what you were active in - sports, academics... No one particular person is popular throughout the entire school.
Quote from samsters24
Is it true that in the cafetaria there's a designated seats area for groups?
No, there isn't. While I did see a few people sit in the same place every day, it was never consistent. In my school, based on what class you were in for the lunch period, you had Lunch A, B, C, or D. Considering where in the school you were located, you would reach the cafeteria at different times for that specific lunch section. What seat you had depended on when you got your food and how fast you could get to the cafeteria. There were often times when you would get your food and have the bell ring, so sitting in any specific group was not a large focus. There wasn't a lot of time to eat in my school (only 30 minutes per section), so you usually just wanted to get your food, eat, and get back to class on time.
Quote from samsters24
Are those mean girls who loves to make fun of people and order you around like their slave really exist in US school? ;p
I never noticed this if there was. There's always drama, but most of the people I knew were fairly cordial. You had people who couldn't stand you, sure, but with fear of suspension and expulsion around for doing something "wrong", people kept control of themselves.
Quote from samsters24
Why you have to move and go to other class every time one class ends? You don't just stay in one class and different teachers come into class?
Been stated before, but no one student's level is the same as any others. I, for one, was involved in the AP classes (a class meant to be taught at the same level as university-based classes - sometimes higher) while other people were in the regular classes. There is a vast difference of the pace between these levels, and not all the students can just stay in one place considering this. Teachers also are known to have a specific specialty, like variances of maths and sciences.
In my school, we also had the seniors who had off-periods (they didn't have to attend classes during these sessions) and other seniors who didn't. Some students take classes where they must travel to a different destination for the classes' learning material. Too much variety does not allow for similarity, so the students move around.
Quote from samsters24
What is that detention thing? Why the teachers lock the students in some kind of room?
Been said before, but detention is minor way of admonishing a student. When I received detention, it was usually a way of holding you back against your will to prevent you from repeating whatever action put you in detention in the first place. Of course, you might think that people would just skip the detention if it was so meaningless, right?
However, skipping detention lands you into a more critical state, like extended detention (called PASS at my school). Extended detention takes you out of the class and puts you in a special room where you must do your work in solace. You are not allowed to speak to anyone, and are forced to abide by more stricter rules than before. Breaking rules in PASS then landed you in suspension from school. Suspension did mean you were "free" from classes, but you were responsible even still for every test/homework that was due. Suspension meant you couldn't do it, and you therefore received zeros for everything. Doing something wrong at this level lands you with an expulsion notice - self-explanatory, I think.
No one wants to miss detention either for the fact that it can land on your permanent school record, which affects whether you can get into university as well.
Quote from samsters24
Are those kissing and smooching things always happen there? Students allowed to kiss in class too? Is it just a common thing there?
Kissing takes place in school, certainly, but not when a teacher is near. In my school, PDA (Personal Display of Affection) was not allowed, which meant no hugging, kissing, sex, and so on and so forth. The act of hugging was normally ignored but kissing could land you a detention notice. Kissing in class was just NOT done, and could also put you in detention. If it can be saved for after class, or better yet, out of school, then it should be.
Quote from samsters24
Is there a manga or anime club there? What you do in there usually? Heard from some friend that lots of fun things in school's anime or manga club.
I was part of an anime club for a short period of time, and depending on who the supporting teacher was for it, you did different things. My supporting teacher was the art teacher, so we often worked on drawing various things, and at times, watched movies. Sometimes, these kinds of clubs are enjoyable, but sometimes they aren't.
Quote from samsters24
How the students there treat foreign students? Heard local students love to intimidate and pick up fight with foreign students for no reason. Is it really that bad?
Foreigners were the same as anyone else in my school - just students forced into the same classroom as everyone else. So, fighting/bullying was dependent on other factors, like personality...but that normally didn't take place.
Quote from samsters24
How come there are lots of dancing events there?
Someone said this before, but it is indeed school spirit. With so many different schools around in every area, specific identification must be made. This school may do this kind of event, while another does that. Dancing events are just easier to organize, and most high schoolers love dancing.
Quote from samsters24
What is that prom thing actually? Why people are so desperate to find a date to prom? Is it really embarassing to go alone?
The Prom Dance is a big event, and usually goes into the yearbooks. People want to reflect on their past with their children saying, "I went with so-and-so to this dance" or something of the sort. It's not embarrassing to go alone, usually, but you do want to make good memories as best you can with someone else you enjoy being with. I never attended it myself, so this is the most I can really say.
Quote from samsters24
Is physical punishment still used there? Because in my place there's no detention thing. If you make a mistake the teacher smack or kick you right away.
Physical punishments equates to jail time here. Teachers may not touch the children, whether via physically, or verbally. Both can wreck havoc on a child (no matter how old) and are strictly forbidden.
Quote from samsters24
Is it true that students there can sue the school or teachers? If a teacher touch a girl student's hand accidentally or not the girl's really going to file a sexual harrasment lawsuit? And what's that first amandment thing that always somehow connected to school? In those tv shows the students always have problem with the school about 1st amandment and always end up in court.
I've never seen this happen, but that's not to say it doesn't. My school was fairly prominent, so under normal circumstances, such an event would never take place. Everyone's under a moral binding, if you will.
Quote from samsters24
Is the teacher in America really still young, beautiful & attractive? Does an affair between teachers and students always happen there? 😛
Ahah, no. The younger teachers normally teach elementary school age children, but there are cases where young teachers attempt higher education levels. Dependent on the degrees teachers will get also determines how old they are by the time they actually stand in front of a class.
Quote from samsters24
What teacher assistant do actually? You get a special extra grade if you're a teacher assistant?
Teaching assistants are not done by students (not in high school and lower), but by college graduates or college students (while in university). TAs normally have a degree and are close to becoming a full-time teacher themselves, or are in a way being paid to help the actual teacher. In university, the TAs are paid to do the jobs they do, as faculty in university has far too much to account for on their own. In high school, TAs are college graduates that are trying to become teachers in their own rights. Grades are not designated to TAs.
Quote from samsters24
What is that science fair thing? Is it a mandatory thing for all students?
I was forced (I do say "forced") to compete in the science fair from grade 3 to grade 9. It is a way of taking notice of younger academically-inclined students through scientific research. The students do the research on a specific topic, and basically are giving a presentation concerning it. They make a presentation board, a model of their topic, a science essay concerning the topic, and graphs detailing their object of interest. Pictures must also be made available to better assist the judges in determining how the project was worked on. Schools usually do this just as a way of giving the children a project to ready them for higher level education. These projects are also noted by scientists as means of...whatever they're looking for at that time.
Quote from samsters24
How american gals say about foreign students especially foreign asian students? Can a foreign student ask an american gal out? Or there's an unwritten rule from the jocks that you stay away from our gal or we will beat u up kind of thing. 😀
People went out with whomever they could in my school...race meant nothing as far as that went. Everyone was "equal".
Quote from samsters24
And last what's that cheerleader gals all about. Is the gals in cheerleaders team are really that special and must be treated real special? They really only date the guys from football team? Wonder if Manick ever date one... 😀
Ah...I don't really want to touch this topic, as I don't know enough about cheerleaders to say much. Cheerleaders often dated the football players because it is they who the cheerleaders most associated with, normally. Easy to date someone you understand better, after all.

Wow~ So many of you fell into the trap! 😔
School life in America is crap. Period. If you can manage to learn anything passed all the idiotic students and teachers that think they're better than you, good luck. Otherwise, don't even bother and find yourself a tutor.

Haha I grew up in Dallas/Ft. Worth so yeah this is basically how the situation is right now in high school. 🙂 But my school has like 2000 something kids and we had some exchange students last year and we do this year to...I just never seem to know who they are or meet them. But this is pretty much my life in high school in high school well in Texas this is pretty much how it is.

I strongly disagree. How could you generalize the entirety of the country's teachings so simply? Some have it better and others don't. Tutors are more than likely worse as they're the LEAST cost efficient normally, and ask for more than they're worth. Public school teachers get far LESS than they're worth. Working within that zone is very difficult - you must allow for those kinds of circumstances!

I've never had a tutor, I just meant that a person is more likely to learn more with one, or even study on their own. I know the schools I went to were not very challenging. But that's sort of beside the point. Go ahead and try to convince me that whatever good American schools manage to do outweighs the bad.

When I was in high school...
Is it true that the students are divided into groups like nerds, preps or jocks thing?
Groups... ah... Pretty much. It's quite easy to tell who hangs out with who, but the students really don't care that much since we tend to hang out with the people we like, and, well... we like people who we have similarities with, and that itself forms the group.
Is there really a cool popular thing system? You really not allowed to talk to cool popular kids unless you're popular too? How can you become a popular kid in US school?
I don't really know. And I don't really care. I talk to a lot of people whether or not they're cool. Although I do avoid talking to people that don't look very...
Are those mean girls who loves to make fun of people and order you around like their slave really exist in US school? ;p
No, not at all.
Why you have to move and go to other class every time one class ends? You don't just stay in one class and different teachers come into class?
This one is true. It's like, the teachers own the classroom, and we have to leave after class. In other countries (typically Asian countries, ie the Philippines), they don't have to move because the teachers do that.
What is that detention thing? Why the teachers lock the students in some kind of room?
Detention. After you get three warnings, you get detention if I'm not mistaken? I've never gotten one so I really don't know.
Are those kissing and smooching things always happen there? Students allowed to kiss in class too? Is it just a common thing there?
PDA is technically not allowed, but students still do so. And students are not allowed to kiss in class. Ew, that's gross.
Is there a manga or anime club there? What you do in there usually? Heard from some friend that lots of fun things in school's anime or manga club.
When I graduated, I heard from my brother that the students formed an anime club. He said that they were made fun of.
How the students there treat foreign students? Heard local students love to intimidate and pick up fight with foreign students for no reason. Is it really that bad?
Usually students are nice to foreign students, especially if you just got there. Fights don't really happen a lot in my school... I think during my four years in high school, I've heard of only two fights.
How come there are lots of dancing events there?
I don't know. Haha.
What is that prom thing actually? Why people are so desperate to find a date to prom? Is it really embarassing to go alone?
Prom... Prom is just a dance. What's actually more important are the after parties. I wasn't desperate to find a date! And it's not embarrassing. Just go to the Prom with your friends! That's what I did during senior year, and I had tons of fun!
Is physical punishment still used there? Because in my place there's no detention thing. If you make a mistake the teacher smack or kick you right away.
Physical punishment is abuse and is illegal.
Is it true that students there can sue the school or teachers?
Now this is true. You have to have a valid reason, of course.
If a teacher touch a girl student's hand accidentally or not the girl's really going to file a sexual harrasment lawsuit? And what's that first amandment thing that always somehow connected to school? In those tv shows the students always have problem with the school about 1st amandment and always end up in court.
My English teacher (a guy) during my senior year likes to pat my head and I really didn't mind. I guess it depends on the person? But filing for a sexual harassment lawsuit is an overstatement.
Is the teacher in America really still young, beautiful & attractive? Does an affair between teachers and students always happen there?
Well, there are many young teachers (of course). There are cute and pretty teachers out there. If you get caught with this affair, the teacher goes to jail. But I don't think that really happens. I mean, it does... but not really that common.
What teacher assistant do actually? You get a special extra grade if you're a teacher assistant?
Teacher assistants help grade tests... they just do the little things. And no, you don't get special treatment.
How american gals say about foreign students especially foreign asian students? Can a foreign student ask an american gal out? Or there's an unwritten rule from the jocks that you stay away from our gal or we will beat u up kind of thing.
What do they say? You can ask anybody out. It doesn't matter whether you're Asian and going to ask out someone of different race.
And last what's that cheerleader gals all about. Is the gals in cheerleaders team are really that special and must be treated real special? They really only date the guys from football team? Wonder if Manick ever date one...
Cheerleaders. Haha. Hmmm... I have a lot of cheerleader friends (because I dance myself) and they date football players because they usually hang out with them (since they cheer for them during games and stuff). But not all of them date football players! Trust me, I know!

I studied in a public school, but I must say, that it's not unusual for someone to drive Hummers or Mustangs in my old school... I don't know if that counts, but meh.

Not interested. If you're so jaded by this point, there's no reason to bother. Just glad that the experiences I had weren't so horrible as you make yours out to be.

Mine weren't "horrible." Bad, maybe. I know that millions of other Americans have had experiences 10x worse than mine. Many schools here aren't even safe...The many cases where kids bring guns, drugs, knives, etc. to school, or kids calling in to report a bombing, outrageous fights, school bus accidents...Speaks for itself.
Even just the controversy over sex education and the bible/evolution. Or kids getting abducted on their way to school or on their way home. Teachers raping their students, students raping their teachers. I don't know about other countries (I know the same thing happens elsewhere though, obviously), but things like this happen often here. Not really worth a half decent education & whatever half baked social skills you may pick up....No matter what country you're in, actually.

Uh, I think you both are missing the point of tutors. Having done my fair share of tutoring in high school and college, I'd like to point out that it's supposed to be supplemental learning. Your teacher should have presented the material in some shape or form, and the tutor's supposed to clarify, explain, review, and do whatever else helps you learn the stuff. But seeing it first is a big part of the game too.
As to the original question? I'll reiterate what everyone else said: depends on the school. I went to a magnet school in NYC, so our cliques were pretty toned down/fluid with some divisions along ethnic lines, but generally even the most annoying/dorkiest kid in school had people to talk to.
What teacher assistant do actually? You get a special extra grade if you're a teacher assistant?
Teacher assistants help grade tests... they just do the little things. And no, you don't get special treatment.
In some high schools, there's a teacher's helper, which is totally a "suck-up" type job. If you're grading tests, you're one of the best students in the class anyway, so points won't do anything. (And as someone else pointed out, it's not really allowed. Most one of my teachers ever let was grading hw.) Otherwise the assistant tasks tend to be things like collecting/handing out papers and cleaning the blackboard. Most of my teachers just randomly rotated/assigned the jobs. (Or it counted towards some honors society requirements for not getting kicked out - I think that was always my motivation.)
my god....you people actually believe every word I say. Prom does not cost 250 dollars, only 95.
I believed you since I know that some school's proms do cost that much. I remember seeing some show, it was on the travel channel I think, that talked about prom for some schools for some reason and they did cost a s**t load of money, but then again they were like private schools in like Chicago and stuff.
not all private school. daed's prom cost is pretty damn low.
True so very true.
At my public school, prom was about $300 a couple.

yeh there are clicks
-jocks hang with jocks, are very popular get the cheerleader girlfriends.
-goths hang with goths, dont talk much to anybody else always look evil and too serious.
-emos hang with emos or with whom ever wouldnt mind having an emo friend. its the truth
-the cute girls always get the most popular boyfriends.
-the nerds hang with the nerds and go are always studying.. even on lunch breaks geez!!
-the preps hang with the preps, they also tend to leave campus for lunch becuz a prep wouldnt dare eat school food.
i would have to say the only thing that the tv shows dont mention is that it really depends on your social status at high school. if your social status is small, u dont like to talk to no one but those that can really relate to you, u will be isolated from the crowd lots of times.
if you are very social, and you feel you can talk to anyone and be cool with them, u will end up having lots of friends, whether your gothic or an outcast as long as you talk to everyone than you will be very popular and well known.
and also to cover the bullying stereotypes. as far as i'm concerned this is just like everyday life, if you offend somebody you will make them mad and they will probably end up wanting to fight you.
if you are just anti-social and seem to have an attitude towards people, u will probably end up being bullied.
just be respectful & try to talk to as much people as possible and you will be very okay!
why because i am the president of the student council of course

I'm seriously against this. The "jocks" or people who like to exercise study mad hard because they want to pass, and yes EVEN during lunch breaks. I know a "nerd" who's dating a cute girl 😛 and u most likely wont get bullied if ur anti-social!! u get bullied if ur will is weak so u have to to show them(if u get bullied) whos boss 😁

School life in America is academically too easy and the result is many ignorant individuals.
Besides that, I go to a private school and its quite different from what you see on television.

Believe it or not, my school is totally....errr... varity-ally. We're all thrown in and mixed in. Public "international" schools for nerds, u gota lov them. We got everything : emo's, goths, "jocks", pervs, potheads, otaku's, even a gothic-lolita-ty girl. 😁 , .no cliques that consist of only goths or hispanics or ect.. Basicly our school has a corny atmosphere.............. it's creepy sometimes. 🤢 🤣
lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u, lov u,........not. u no u lov me tho!
