Lately I've been seeing posts saying soandso is recruiting this and that. Well I want to join these scanlator groups! But I don't know what jobs do [as in what are typesetters and cleaners etc..] because I want to help update these mangas and contribute to them! But I can't at least apply if I don't know what each job is and whether or not I can do it. Thanks in advance!

Hey there 🙂
You can look at our group's website under the recruitment tab. There's a brief description of what each position takes care of: http://www.moonflower-scans.tk

The job descriptions may slightly vary, depending on the group, but here's a short description:
Raw Providers:
- They buy and scan manga/manhwa.
- Or (in some groups) they just find it on the net, in which case #1 is called a "Scanner".
Translators:
- They translate the text into a file, which is later proofread and typeset onto the pages.
Proofreaders:
- They correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and the general flow of English in the scripts.
Cleaners:
- They edit the pages to get rid of the text, turn the background to perfect white and ink to perfect black, while not destroying the gray patterns. Redrawing the out-of-bubble text (or the missing middles of the double spreads) used to be part of their job description, but now that's often a separate position altogether.
Redrawers:
- They redraw the text that's directly on the picture, on the see-through bubbles, etc. They also fill in the missing middles of double spreads and they sometimes fix the lines that cleaners blurred out.
Typesetters:
- They put in the text onto the pages. They choose fonts to best match the story, they sometimes try to recreate SFX visual effects (if the groups redraws SFXs as well) and they try to cover up redrawing imperfections with skillful text placement.
Editors:
- Cleaner(/Redrawer)/Typesetter - in most groups.
- Another word for Proofreaders - in others.
Quality Checkers:
- They check the typeset chapter for cleaning or typesetting mistakes and fix them, they try to decide if the typeset lines make sense or if they need some rephrasing/verification, they need to OK the release. <-- the most "advanced" version
- Like above, without fixing the mistakes themselves. <-- the medium version.
- They just check the text for mistakes and inform the typesetter of the changes. Usually in groups that don't have proofreaders. <-- the simplest version
You can PM me if you need a temporary (freelance) cleaner/redrawer for some project. Especially if it's something with nice art.
Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.

I've never understood how anyone can be a truly effective typesetter without being a translator/understanding Japanese. The text you get from the translator will not always fit within the bubble, or not be the optimum shape. All of our typesetters are also proficient in Japanese, and it's come in useful on pretty much every release...
Something other groups should think about if they can spare it!

Right, lacking translators isn't enough, so now we should demand Japanese-reading typesetters, too?
There's always the proofreading and QC stages. And if it doesn't fit.... Re-size the text or contact the translator. >_>;
As a Japanese-illiterate typesetter, I think I do a good enough job, thank you very much.
Not that I'm saying it's a bad idea, but it's pretty far fetched.
Anyways, the question has been answered so I'll close this thread.
Do search before posting though.
We have this very useful thread.
Good luck with your group.
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.
