I've played Fate/Stay Night as well as a few others, and I love them. : D If you're looking for a visual novel that doesn't have many H-scenes but still has a great plot then I'd recommend F/S N. Although it might be too much for starters since it takes around 20 hours just to get through the game once. That's a plus in my eyes though.

Only one I actually completed without getting bored is Disgaea Infinite. Most other I tried I got bored and quit.

I've played F/SN, Tsukihime, Kagetsu Tohya. Yeah, they're all type-moon's. Been wanting to play Fate/Hollow Ataraxia for years, just waiting for english patch or my japanese to improve... Also waiting for mahou tsukai no yoru. it will also be a VN rite?

You can find a bunch on thepiratebay.org
Problem is though, you need to know the titles.
You also need daemon tools or similar program to mount the iso.
Personally, I have really enjoyed some VNs. Though others were mindnumbingly stupid, dull and unarousing.
My favorites are by far the typemoon stuff, fate/stay and tsukihime.
I also really like alot of the stuff by Digital Object. Crescendo is amazing and Snow Sakura is this great feel good highschool story thing.
One I'm absolutely dying to play is Phantom of Inferno, by Nitroplus. Can't seem to find it anywhere though. If anyone knows where I can get my grubby paws on it (legal or otherwise) drop me a PM please.

I played a girl one called Yo-Jin-Bo. It wasn't bad. Pretty cute and a little funny. Most of the better ones are only in Japanese. I occasionally search for some english translated ones to see if I get lucky. I found a cute looking free one in english. The artwork looks pretty good too. Gonna try it in a little bit.

Are you talking about this game? I don't know if the links on HongFire work or not. They are pretty old stuff. And there's something on thepiratebay too...
Or you can buy it at Amazon....

Great game, but if you're planning to get the English version, get ready for a really bad UI.

I'm not particulary fond of them. They're kind of time consuming too.
I rather go with a manga or anime adaptation.
