Has anyone read a manga that seriously explores the "gay community"? It's more likely to be yaoi/BL/yuri/GL, I guess, but it doesn't have to be - I just want to read about things like gay bars, online forums/meet-ups, cruising, special gay districts or gathering places, gay slang or "in-speak", gay rights rallies and things like that, that have to do with the gay community and are exclusive to the gay community.

Like, Partners explores the more hardcore BDSM side of the gay community in a great deal of depth...

The Handsome Man in the Sleeping Woods also kind of deals with the gay community, AIDS, etc...

And while the primary focus of The Man of Tango isn't the gay community itself, it does play a pretty huge part in terms of the atmosphere, the interactions of the main characters with the side characters, male-only dance halls, "gay gyms" and things like that. <3

More recommendations, please? 🙂

Have you tried Plica?

And if you're fine with western comics, you may want to check out Ralf König.

Honey & Honey fits perfectly.
There's also Rica'tte Kanji?! and Happy Picture Diary.
The main character in Double House works in a transvestite bar.
So does the main character in Mimi-kun no Boy no Kisetsu.
And the main character in Okama Report.

Wow...! Thank you, Mo-Dean and akari_mizunashi! The only ones I've read from your recs are Okama Report and Double House - everything else is new material! You have my gratitude!

Drat! When I said Plica I was thinking of Honey & Honey instead. Plica is still in the closet so there's actually not that much about the "gay community". Oh well.
