Did you enjoy the beginning more?

A few of my friends argue that MSN was at its best during the beginning of the manga, where it concentrated more on the harem, gags, and the ecchi. They believe that the manga should have stayed that way.
My opinion, however is that it became a better manga when it focused more on the action and the plot. It went from just a regular ecchi harem with a humongous cast to an actual story with more substance than that of a regular harem.
Basically, it was during Mahora Festival that we believe the manga completely shifted gears. What do you guys think?

the change started around volume 4-6 [i dont remember the arcs i stopped reading it back then...5-6years ago]
when it was showen that every one in his class was a lvl20+ mage/godlike fighter[and everyone else too for that matter]
when this was not at all the case in the first couple of volumes
i would not have cared if it had started out with everyone being godlike
but when it happens like this it feels like the first volumes had been a lie to lure the readers in
i felt betrayed

Not true at all. The main character was a ten year old with barely any battle experience, whereas everyone else was much older and from a fighting background. In fiction, it wouldn't be so hard to find someone stronger than him. Not everyone in the class was stronger than him either, maybe 5 out of like 30 of them, whereas the rest were just ordinary teens.

I like the manga more now because it has more action packed into it, and entertaining but in a non-ecchi visual novel sort of way. The beginning had too much absurd humor and bunch of "accidental nakedness." And finally, Negi can live up to his father a bit!

There actually are people who liked the beginning more? Weird.
I don't see any reason why someone would like a "just amusing" harem with random, episodic plots would be over an action series with a central plot, interesting magic system (I loved how several extras show research into mystical practices of different cultures), lots of character development, an awesome school festival spanning over 9 volumes, a grand quest to save the world, and one that actually makes sense in context, lots of "befriending", a lesbian albino demon half-blood chick with a sword wearing meido clothes (I was sold~ 😀 ), and the same old harem humor for regular breathers in-between the Awesome.
