what about the lovely cliche that the student president is always handsome and atractive 0_o
I completely agree! I dont know any student presidents who arent either girls who want it on their college applications or guys who are big nerds! and that goes with, why are all the guys who are at the top of the class so "good looking"? In real life, it seems like guys never get bot brains and looks. how sad 🙁 sorry about double posting!! I didnt mean to.... 😢

As do I.
And I've seen far more ugly stupid people than I have smart people.

I think they mostly mean that all the smart guys happen to be the best looking guys in the school. God doesn't give with both hands.
I like how someone mentioned the art which is very true. Most shojo look exactly like the last with only a few distinguishing characteristics.
I hate that most of the male leads are all Gary Stus and have no faults.

yes, that was what I meant. I didnt mean that all smart people are ugly, all stupid people are good looking, or that all class presidents are big nerds. just that a shoujo CLICHE that i dont like is that all the good looking guys are also the smartest. Im sure it happens sometimes in real life, but not always.

But now you're totally avoiding the shoujo cliche of the beautiful delinquent. That guys never the sharpest cheese in the cellar.

True so true. But what about the cliche with the 15 yr. old that somehow graduated from college already and owns a multimillion dollar corporation yet still finds the free time to screw around in high school.
😐

My least favorite shoujo cliches would be:
- Clumsy clueless girl who stays like that throughout the story with no character development.
- Girl x teacher relationships. I roll my eyes over these.
- Girl x brother relationships. Ditto.
- Girl who becomes the head master of a school.
- Girl gets sent back to another world (whether a book or warp hole) and realizes she's a chosen priestess. Gets four bishies as her guardians. Fushigi Yuugi first time around is alright. Any other story that replicates it in any way, no thank you.
- Girl who stays weak and helpless throughout the entire story. Needs her "prince in shining armor" to save her all the time.
- Girl who must live in another guy's house and that's pretty much the entire plot essential to getting both girl and guy together. No other characters really invovled and no character progression. If there was a story similar to this but with an actual plot and more character involvement, I will like that very much.
- Girl who keeps doing the wrong things and choosing the wrong type of guys. The type where she just doesn't learn her lesson with relationships. I don't read that much romance shoujo so I'm not bothered by this that much but it is quite annoying nonetheless.
- The beach scene! Arrgh.
And that's as far as I can list. ^_^

I am an avid shoujo reader but...
I don't really like it when there is no distinction between character design of different age groups (like how mothers actually look more like sisters) and how female characters are always portrayed very beautifully even if they're having the worst day of their life or wearing normally unflattering clothes. I like it better when "ugly" sides of a character are shown (like Kyoko in Skip Beat)

The tutoring one drives me nuts. It's, like, argh! Learning is hard enough without the extra distraction!!! 🤢 And, and, argh!
They say it's the thought that counts, but then they tell you, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions......"
Will no one scanlate Takahashi Miyuki?! T_T

Okay, here's one:
The Sassy Heroine makes a stand against the handsome yet Feared Male Lead (who is either from a powerful family such as the son of a politician, a royal, the school dean's son or created his own high reputation). Having made a defiant stand against him when others were too afraid to, the young Feared Male Lead is suddenly attracted to her and declares that he will make her his slave, or plaything, or girlfriend.
In chapter one of Goong, the artist makes a great mocking illustration of this scenario.
The only manga that managed to make the cliche work was Hana Yori Dango, though I think that mostly had to do with the fact that Kamio-sensei's 'Feared Male Lead' was actually not the main love interest (that role was assigned to another character until popular readership gave her a change of heart) and was genuinely disliked by the Sassy Heroine for quite sometime.
Outside of a dog a book is a man's bestfriend, inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

Ahhhhh! There are so many!
-
Let's start with a complete bastard of a male lead (Ryoki in Gimmick, anyone?). Who the mangaka thinks they can somehow convince the reader they are actually really nice deep down.
-
Or... a stupid/clueless/plain/weak heroine who all the guys adore because she's...stupid/clueless/plain/weak.
-
"Idol" guys who constantly have flowers/sparkles drawn around them but are completely devoid of personality.
-
Girls who blush like crazy just cause a guy so much as glances at them. And the internal monologuing afterwards "Ohmigod! he looked at me! What do I do 😕 ?"
-
Bitchy jealous friends
-
Girls who blame themselves for absolutely everything
Hmmm... that's all I can think of right now. But there are more, trust me.
