I really enjoyed Fushigi Yuugi (the first 13 vols; haven't read the last 5 yet), but I couldn't stand how 'romantic' it was sometimes...it just got so sappy and annoying once in a while...

I really don't understand why someone would fall in love with Miaka. And Tamahome, while sweet, he was very, very unrealistic [although it would be nice if guys were really like him 🤣 ]

I actually LOVE reverse harem. Right now, it's sort of slightly still new (did that make any sense?). In a couple of years, it'll be as bad as the regular super dee dooper cliche of regular harem, but for now I'm still lovin' it 🤣

My sis finds manga stereotypes annoying, but I love them! 😛 There's always the one who is ironic (such as Hunny from OHSHC), the one who eats a lot (such as Miaka from FY), the one who's extremely dense (such as Tamaki from OHSHC), the mysterious guy (such as Yuki from Furuba), the bad boy (such as Kyo from Furuba), the one who's quiet/creepy (such as Yuki from Haruhi Suzumiya), the one who's happy-go-lucky (such as Fay from TRC, Koizumi from Haruhi Suzumiya), etc, etc...can anyone think of anymore? There are plenty, but I know I'm leaving a few out...

Another one that's not as common, but I've started to notice more of them lately is that there's almost always someone who has some sort of accent. In Lovely Complex, Otani and Risa have strange accents (or is that just me? 😕 and what is that accent?). Azumanga Daioh 's Osaka and X's Sorata have an Osaka accent. Maguri in Shinshi Doumei Cross (The Gentleman's Alliance Cross) has a Hiroshima accent...am I forgetting any people in anime/manga with accents? 😕

Yeah the nosebleeds 😀 Especialy in nagasarete airantou the main character has a lot of trouble with it. It seems he's hyper sensitive with his nose for ecchi thoughts 🤨

But in reality it's quite hard to imagine getting that from seeing some naked hot chick. Maybe if she stomped you on the nose offcourse 😛

I haven't even seen or heard of someone getting that. I mean last ... (eugh forgot the time but somewhere from now untill a month ago)... there was a nice blondine that performed a half-naked strip act in a loaded bar. Suppose even just 10% of the people there were to get a nosebleed ! Nasty !!

And I hate syringes (dont have a phobia but I just dont like them in my veins) so having much nosebleeds and getting a bloodtransfusion would defenitly be out of the question for me 😎

ps: I don't visit stripbars, the student stripped for no apparant reason, must have been either money, alcohol or both ^-^

yah i like lovely complex lol, its hard to pick out if they have accents from the translations though but im guessing they probably do in the raws of them. while were on the topic, the tsukomi (i think thats what its called, 2 man comedy team...) theme between the main characters is becoming more popular, so is tsunadere theme (a la: love hina/negima/crimson hero/akuma de soro/haruhi/suzuka/stroke material~my f**kin lover (lol i love this title)/etcetc)

Hmm, this sounds sort of like the stuff in a Shinjo Mayu manga. The thing is, if the girl actually did kick the guy's butt, he either backs off completely, which would be the end of the relationship, or he follows her even more. If the former happens, that would be the end of the story. If the latter happens, the guy starts to become threatening and is no longer the "safe" male lead that is usually in shoujo, and he might be considered a stalker. 😲 Not a person who you want to get the girl as I see it.

But isn't the situation of the shoujo character saying "no" and there's a sense of her not meaning it something that applies to the smuttier shoujo pieces? Maybe it would be good to avoid this type of shoujo if annoys you enough. 😉 😉

How about the one where everybody goes to a hotspring, the heroine overheats in the spring and faints, and the major love interest rushes in to pull her out?
Or the one where everyone goes to some ski resort, the heroine wanders off in the middle of a snowstorm, and the MLI goes to rescue her... ? Randomly they end up in some shack together, huddled together for body warmth. Quite frequently the MLI gets a terrible fever as well.
Shoujo mangaka tend to start throwing in these two plot devices around the sixth or seventh volume, I think (usually when they are beginning to get desperate).

Hehe I remember seeing the snowstorm scenario in HYD but I didn't mind much. Pretty good manga. 😛 Stuff will always be already done cause there's so much stuff the annoying ones are the ones that seem to happen in every manga. I'll think of some later. 🙂

Hmm... most of the scenes you guys mentioned are quite cliche but I don't really hate them, just take it as part of what makes it shoujo. If you were talking about the worst kind of cliche, it would be when the ugly girl gets the guy. Now THAT'S what I call completely unrealistic, but you get that kinda plot all the time. Come on, what are they trying to do, make us girls feel relieved that we aren't perfect but can still land a guy who appears perfect? Puh-leeze. But then again, it doesn't really annoy me, since I'm used to it already (read too many shoujo manga to get irritated ^^")

I do find that manga where the girl gets raped and now she's like a complete weakling etc really gets on my nerve (Hitomi Genki Kingdom/Kiss in the Blue). I don't care how realistic it is, but putting some girl who just sits there and cry 24/7 is more than I can take (so far I think those are the type that I absolutely will not finish). Oh, and teacher-student love stories are just disturbing. I don't know why, but they are. I guess it's the maturity issue...

I've seen that more times than I care for and not just in manga anymore. I've seen it in Dramas too.

And yea, they do speak a bit differently in Lovely complex, I thought I was insane. XD

Yup, it's Kansai-ben. LC takes place in Osaka and people talk like that in there. ^__^ I must say, it's really hard to translate such mangas!

And to add to the topic...
I must say that I've read maaaany shoujo mangas (too many maybe)... Actually, I don't read any other genre... And IMO the worst cliche is the above mentioned - when an ordinary-girl gets a totally-bishonen guy ... Come on, how many gorgeous and perfect guys do you know that would like our simple-minded, supposedly 'fat', usually not too bright OR pretty and ALWAYS bad at cooking heroine?
There's also the infamous the-girl-gets-into-a-fight-with-the-bad-yet-cool-guy cliche but they end up together in the end. 😕
And don't even get me started on Shinjo Mayu cliches... LOL

I knew so much more...but can't remember them now. XD

well you gotta take it the other way too where the totally loser guy gets an awesome girl (love hina comes to mind but thats just borderline shoujo). honestly, how many of you girls would go out with someone who failed to get into college 3 times 😕 thats what i thought....

Shoujo cliches I dislike:

1. Harem of any kind, esp. when the object of affection is useless, a wimp, or has no redeeming qualitites to them whatsoever.

2. Rape fantasies. F*** you mangaka.

3. The main heroine is gluttonous, idiotic, and useless. Why are they the heroine?
   Which also leads me to the question, "Why the hell do you like her MLI?"

4. I don't know - I've stopped reading shoujo.

5. The main leading interest is a huge ass, but the girl is a simpering ninny when he abuses her. Which leads me to the question, "Why do you like him ML?" They are self made victims, and my level of sympathy for their plights = zero.

6. Rape = love. F*** you mangaka. Rape =/= love.

7. Seeing the girl in the bath, and the girl throws a huge tantrum and keeps calling the guy perverted even though they all know that it was only an accident. WTF.

8. Everyone pairs up, and I mean everyone, including the pet dog Rover.

Well, Love Hina is hardly shoujo. Even though I never read the manga, I did watch the anime and it got so annoying that I just stopped watching. I would think that Love Hina's more like a shounen version of idealized romance (nerd gets hot girl kinda thing). Harems are fine (sort of) but when the person being worshiped is this super geeky/nerdy dude, you start wondering "WTF? Is the mangaka having secret fantasies because he's like that?"

yah id say love hina is borderline shoujo right between shoujo and shounen but its the basic idea of the hero/heroine falling for the "nobody" who doesnt stand out and who they would almost never notice (cant be 100% sure /shrug)
