Worst Shoujo Cliche!

I hate when the story opens up with the girl saying:"My goal is to get a boyfriend!," and when the girl is stupid as sh*t -____-

I dislike it when:
- Ahhh he's going to kiss me!!!
- If I can't have him then no one can
- OMG you're (shirtless) naked!
- He's so mean to me...but so handsome.

Roman Saotome from SKET DANCE highlights one cliche that I find pretty annoying:
Girl running off to school, goes "OMG I'm late!", and then just happens to bump into a cute guy. Falls in love instantly.

hmm, let me see...
- Typical shoujo heroes and heroines (I think you all know what I mean)
- When the hero gives the heroine a bracelet or a ring or something (even if it's not valuable, the heroine treasures it very much) and she always loses it...be it stolen or simply loses it. It's kind of funny, I know they come and I just try to guess when...
- The childhood friend or the second guy in love triangles never stands a chance
- The heroine starts looking for something even though it's raining or her precious ring given to her by the hero falls of the window and she just jumps out the window to catch it...really, can't she think a little before doing things 😕 I know she's usually just plain stupid, but it's the most basic logic...
- Girls that cry for almost every little and unimportant thing... I HATE whimpy girls and cry-babies!!!! GRRR!!! >:-(
- How the girl is cornered by the hero's fanclub, and they say something like ''Don't get too close to him, he's not yours'' or anyway something like that, and the girl doesn't say anything, but stands there in fear, instead she should tell them that a) it's a free country, b) it's democracy, c) he's not an object and d) he's not theirs either.
- The hero is usually a head taller than the heroine and he's so strong he can carry princess-style, even though she can't be that light, not to mention that she eats a lot (more than the guy sometimes)
oh, there are a lot more, but these are the ones that come to my mind right now. I'll write more when I remember them 😁

1- When every male character seems to fall in love with the main heroine because of her smile.
2- This isn't very common but i still hate it. when the female lead makes out with another guy than the main, and instead of the main being angry he gets jealous hugs her and says to her "you are mine".
3- A real jackass of a male character [not the normal tsundre but a real ass] turns out to have a bad past, so now it's okay for him to be an ass for everyone.
4- When the female lead falls in love with everything the main male is doing. "AH he's so cute when he eats", "AH look at him walk" , "AH look at his sleeping face" etc.....
5-When the female lead really messes up the relationship, and instead of her trying to fix it. we get the male lead chasing after her.
6- The start of most manga, "an average girl who no body so far has been interested in her, ends up having 2-3 guys in love with her by the first couple of chapters" . Mangaka should be more inventive with these introductions.
7- The main female character gets insecure every time she sees the main male with another girl. Yet it's okay for her to hang out with the herds of bishonen characters, and has fights with the main male about it.

I have just thought of a single line used in shoujo.
'You're a girl!'
Maybe it's something lost in translation that I fail to understand, but these words seemed to be used an awful lot in shoujo for various reasons as to why a female cannot act a certain way or do certain things. Just about anything fits into this statement - e.g. dressing like a boy, living alone, acting in a brave way (not just with fighting), crossing the street (I'm not kidding), sleeping in class, sitting cross-legged and just generally making any independent decisions on her own because she's a girl!
Seriously, I've heard the line so many times in different situations I want to bang my head against my desk sometimes. Is a female in shoujo not supposed to do anything at all 😕 ?

i usually come across the line "So you really are a girl". i've seen it used when a girl who is strong does something weak. its not just a shoujo cliche because its in shounen too. it annoys the HELL out of me. i hate the idea that girls can't be strong, and if they are then their not feminine. even worse, the line is usually used as some type of compliment. like the guy starts thinking the girl is cute because she "finally starts acting like a girl" (i.e. weak).
soo yeah i hate that cliche and other sexist cliches. it probably wouldn't bother me so much if its only found in shounen and seinen, but when shoujo manga has it... I just really hate that that's the message that young girls are reading

lialah and KaoriNite- same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate that sentence too!! Weak = cute, stupid = cute, raging jealousy and lunacy enough to rival Bridezilla = cute..... why?!?!!? 😢 what's cute is that the heroine has to rely on the guy character for something so he can feel big and strong, that is such a wrong message to send to girls.
-
Why is the heroine ALWAYS stupid? It is impossible to get a 10 on a math test. If they were that stupid they wouldn't have graduated elementary school.
-
Heroine's friends tell her to have sex with her boyfriend on the third date or she'll be dumped...
-
"It's okay if it's you" !#$@#%U^$JHG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No it's not! Stick to your principles!
5.The wishy-washy heroine who thinks the hero doesn't like her so she dates his best friend or something so that she can get over the hero.... wrong on many levels
-
Love at first sight.
-
Married before graduating college, even worse, before high school ends....
-
The other girl who likes the hero tries to have the heroine raped... She needs serious medical and psychological help if she can think of that plan in junior high, okay? So do the authors if they think that it's perfectly normal to add that to a manga that's directed towards young adolescents.
-
The lack of communication between the hero and heroine. :sigh: if only they talked more, half the unnecessary drama would be gone

if a girl cuts your finger and a guy licks it he is just looking for some disease. and shes gonna get an infection.
Actually, your saliva contains enzymes that kill some of the bacteria, so the finger-licking guy might be disinfecting the wound. 😉 But somehow I doubt that's what the mangaka had in mind ...
Another thing I can't understand is when a couple is walking on the sidewalk, the guy always walks on the 'outer' side (the one closer to the street). He assumingly 'protects' the girl, but from what, I wonder: a) She's so clumsy she could fall on the street and under a car for no reason.
b)He's afraid he himself might push her under a car (Some heroines are very annoying, so I totally understand the urge)
c) A car might randomly drive on the sidewalk. 🤣

I agree with dreycy about the need for more shoujo roadkill. Too many heroines should be walking into cars and avoid using the sidewalk altogether.
However, my most hated shoujo cliche has to be the standard love rival formula.
Step 1. Female lead is sought after by 2 handsome guys. (Well this a manga aimed at girls so this is to be expected and well this part is usually cute, so no problems with this step.)
She picks one and all is well. It turns out that the competition brought the pair closer together. All is well in shoujo flower land.
Step 2. Enter the beautiful, fake, and deceitful girl who always gets her way, and guess what... she wants the male lead!? gasp
Step 3. Female lead becomes insecure and a bunch of stupid drama happens. The female is an idiot and misreads a bunch of situations, playing right into her rival's plan. Then all the characters become unlikable and I wish the series had ended sooner.

100% this. This cliche is so annoying and overused, it kills the series for me. Especially if the heroine is so dumb she just overreacts and misunderstands every tiny little thing and would blame the guy for it, then either guy would try to explain or he'd get angry, then the girl would realize the mistake and would apologize...THEN it will happen again and story would pretty much repeat itself.. I'm sure people see this A LOT.
Blahblah...

that's not only in mangas like that, its called proper etiquette in reallife, like, walking on the road side, opening the door for the woman and letting her through first. you should actually know stuff like that, but oh well. i dont expect any etiquette from todays children anymore. just take a look at the children whose parents bring them to a restaurant, makes you wanna punch the whole family 😀

Well, here's some of my own "Aargh!" moments when I read shojo mangas (I didn't write them in a particular order):
- The amazing Guy 1 who's no 1 in the whole school = horrible first impression personnality with arrogance to boot. (But the Heroine will still end up with him because of some sad story)
- Same guy but this time is the rich-heir of some leading company in Japan/Korea etc.
- The love triangle where Guy 2 is a childhood friend of Heroine and although they've spent so much time and adventure together, she still chooses Guy 1 because of her "uncontrollable" feelings of pure love at first sight.
- When the first guy the Heroine meets is usually the incredibly nice guy she'll never choose at the end.
- It only takes one heroic rescue from a guy to completely take over Heroine's heart.
- When a first kiss is the biggest deal ever. (Especially accidental ones that spell "You'll end up with him even though you feel outraged right now")
- The Guy 1 just needs to hug the Heroine tight and tell her how much he loves her and cares about her to receive her forgiveness after any situation.
- The Heroine is only around 13 yrs old of age and has already found THE love of her life.
- The hard-core Heroine with a strong personnality that always cries and shows her weak side when Guy 1 is there.
- Gender-bender shojo's. There's usually a whole lot of cringe each time I read those.
- The Rival will soften up by the end of the manga and become a new best friend !
- When the Heroine tries to forget the horrible things Guy 1 'caused her to live but still loves the guy (Stop being a masochist !)
- When the Heroine is completely oblivious to Guy 2's feelings and never realizes them.
- When the Heroine comes from a previously rich family but has fallen to poverty because of Debts by Dad/ Horrible accident/ Death. Usually leads to living with Guy 1 and all the romance that ensues.
Well, I got some more in mind but there's been so much that's already been said where I agree 100%. (Especially anything that involves love triangles and the Heroine's background)

- The girl trips and lands on top of the boy... Then there's a bunch of heart beats.
😔

In alot of Go Ikeyamada's mangas, the heroine doesn't end up with Guy 1, instead she ends up with Guy 2-especially Uwasa No Midori-Kun! 🤣
