This week's poll was suggested by Masae. Lately, I've been seeing a lot of series with the word "villain" or something similar in the title. Do you have any opinions on this trope?

You can submit poll ideas here: https://www.mangaupdates.com/topic/kilkdnn/site-manga-poll-suggestions

Previous Poll Results:

Question: When do you prefer to read manga (or manhua / manhwa)?

Choices:

  • Morning - votes: 116 (6.6%)
  • Afternoon - votes: 189 (10.8%)
  • Evening - votes: 556 (31.8%)
  • Late at night - votes: 888 (50.8%)

There were 1749 total votes. The poll ended: August 16, 2025

I believe previous polls indicated that we have many night owls

This poll is desperately in need of a "side character/other" option.

I read a lot of rofan, and personally, I really like when the FL becomes and stays (this is the less common part) a character who's only tangential to the "main plot". The crown prince and saintess or whatever still fall in love and get married, the hero defeats the demon king, maybe this even takes place after the "main story" is over, and the FL isn't the most important/most love/most OP person ever. She ends up with another side character, a 2nd ML, or someone never mentioned in the original story.

I like an OP MC as much as the next person, but it can get kind of tiring when they're all the same, so I appreciate seeing characters who don't have to be the main character of their whole world, they're just the main character of their own life with its own unique struggles.

It also allows for them to have more nuance since they're not immediately forced into this hero/heroine or villainess/villain archetype, they can just be a person.

Villainess. Cause it's really rare. Most of them are just "villainess".

I have to lean towards a Female MC, and since evil women >>>>>> """"""""""evil"""" women >>>>>>>>> non-evil women, I have to go with villainess, no matter how true the villain part actually is, they are better by default than heroine even if all they do is laugh differently.

I suppose because of the type of genres i prefer it is Heroine...

I wonder how you define a "hero"/"heroine" and "villain"/"villainess".

For example, I wouldn't call Elric brothers as heroic, but they're not villains either. Or maybe, like Denji from Chainsaw Man, he's not heroic, but not exactly a villain.

We definitely are missing antihero and antiheroine option... Someone like Deadpool, though I personally would still put it into hero option I suppose... Though then it just means "main lead", and villain is just someone who actively hurts others...
