Well, if they're trees that actually belong to someone (in their yard, etc.) then it's not good to pick the fruit, though I doubt anyone would care if you picked up the fallen fruit (which can still be fine to eat, depending on the conditions).

If the trees are in someone's yard, you could always ask the people who live there if you could pick some, or even offer to pick for them & with some of the fruit as payment for your labor.

I moved here to the OC for college and I'm living with my aunt and uncle.
They just have no food in the fridge whatsoever when i get back.
So I picked at the tiny grapes and lemon in the backyard.
I have a feeling I'm on the brink of malnutrition-death...

You can get 10 packs of Top o' Ramen from Stater Brother for $1. Thats less then a can of tuna, if you have access to water and a stove. XD They are not instant, but they're cheap.

If you can't afford THAT, at 10 cents a package, I'd say beg or watch for money falling out of peoples pockets. You should get 10 cents in no time.

You can actually cook it on the exhaust manifold of a car, if you wanted to.

I know a lot of tricks....

Then there's the rice option which has been stated multiple times. OH and you could always make a huge tub of pasta and store it in the fridge, that'll last you a few days or so..
Oh, and I also agree with canned food, except I reckon it tastes kinda tinny..
You'd also be surprised at how much you can buy with $5. Not always the best meals, but it'll keep you alive.
And if none of those work, you could always pull a homeless stunt or something. My friend was sitting on the side of the road and some guy handed her $10.
But wow, broke to the point of starvation..

I second bugging friends.

Another option is find a friend with a bj's/costco's club card and go on a shopping trip with them. You'll find all sorts of cheap high carb foods that you can live off of. McDonald's dollar menu is another option-you can almost always score a dollar off someone.
