First of all reassess what are good mangas. Those you listed are popular mangas however IMO they're far from the best as most of them lack all the elements necessary to make a cream of the crop manga. Sure if you belong to the mindless masses like any other medium the truly good stuff is overlooked while the less great to mediocre is applauded. It's a fault of society but things are always like that. 🙁

Best manga? Well in what category? What genre? You need to be more specific if you want to find the truly good ones otherwise you'll get 5 pages of so~so manga. 😛

Personally I would suggest Imperfect Hero, Train-Man, Dears, and Kage Tora.

Well here is a way to help narrow the search. What manga do you currently own and or read?

wow, I was about to suggest a lot of those...
More: Show me the money (love comedy), Black God (action with a touch of romance), Highschool of the Dead (if you don't mind gore. Ecchi.), Love Hina (everyone has to read this eventually), Negima, and Full Metal Panic (mechs + school romance/comedy)... The list goes on....

Well, for action, I would recommend Claymore. The art can be better, but it's pretty detailed and such. I don't think there's a lot of comedy, but the fight scenes are VERY exciting. (Hajime no Ippo is good too, but the art is barely tolerable in the beginning. It gets better later on.) Kekkaishi has the comedy and action you mentioned.

If you want to broaden your horizons, I would point out mystery and psychological. For that genre, 20th Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto are my current favorites. Survival is a great theme too. For that one, I recommend 7 Seeds and King of Thorns. For the historical/supernatural genre, Thread of Time is my favorite. For pure fantasy, xxxholic (by Clamp, so no henai or ecchi in it) is good. The current releases are really exciting. Lol, I stayed up until one in the morning during the weekend (during the school year) once. Now for a random manga...Hotman (now being scanlated by null). There is a little hentai stuff in there, but not a lot if you're worried about that kind of thing. Hope that helped. 🙂

Hehe I second Love Hina I saw the anime first and I thought it was lame. But I was bored one day and I had the manga so I started reading the rest is history. Also negima by the same author is great. Just started reading back from volume 12. You've listed some good mangas there not like the stereotypical first post. So if you're into shounen I reccomend Kekkaishi and Full Metal Alchemist also I like Eyeshield 21 and Hajime no Ippo if you like sports manga. Romance gotta say Maison Ikkoku, video girl ai. Depression manga - the only one i've had the balls to read so far is SAIKANO. Damn thing messed with my mind and made me insanely depressed I liked the feeling though but I hear that saikano is lightweight in terms of depressing manga but I'm not ready to see for myself yet. Booyakasha 😛

these are my favourites

best action- rurouni kenshin
hands down, this series features the deepest characters, best story line for an action series, great fight scenes, and very touching

best comedy- love hina
this is the first manga i literay laughed out load, i havent read anything passed volume 2 yet as i can find anymore, but its great

most atmospheric- gto
my fav manga for some odd reason i cant really put my finger on it. i like it even better than kenshin =/.
when i read thi s series i felt that i was part of the class onizuka teaches, and when the series ended i felt there was an emply spot in my heart (very emotional at the end imo)... u should really check it out

best sports manga- eyeshield 21
i heard slam dunk is better than this but i havent gotten around to reading taht yet. the thing i liked about this manga is that the main team dont always win... so tehre is some competition

tatical manga- hikaru no go
i like this series alot for some reason the manga it self feels that it can be related to real people...

thats about all the manga i fully enjoyed... i read a few more like bleach, naruto black cat, few others but didnt enjoy them as much as the ones i stated

Slam Dunk truly is the greatest sports manga.

ES21 is good, but it's a different style... say a bit less realistic and storyline isn't quite as good.
