there's a lot of manga like that too. So I don't count that as an excuse to not read western comics. Its not like you have to start from the very beginning anyway. Or realistic enough, or dramatic enough, or just 'cause he didn't like the character or didn't want to work with what was given. DC's last retcon was Infinite Crisis, which wiki dates to 2005, so anything post 2005 is fine, and Marvel's constantly changing their storylines. Plus this is what universes are for, stay in ultimate verse or golden age or whatver and you won't get that lost, cause crossovers tend to stay within universe, maybe. Really though, comic wikis are everyone's friend, 'cause I don't think anyone 'cept the most hardcore comic book fans even bothers attempting to keep up with all the comics DC and Marvel are throwing out at the moment.

I miss golden age Superman and Lois Lane. They're so much cooler than their modern counterparts. But I like the most recent incarnation of the flash; he's adorable.

For very serious American comics, Art Spiegelman's Maus is one of the best holocaust books around, and his "In the Shadow of No Towers" is just a must read reaction to 911. His comic books feel like punches to the gut, and you almost feel guilty for laughing (and they're hysterical) and they're a must read for anyone looking for intelligent comics.

"The Walking Dead's" got zombies
"Y the Last Man" is about the last man on Earth
The "Sandman" and "Magic" series by Gaiman are goth/occultish and "Sandman"'s a classic
Sin City is noir/mystery and very worth a read

Highway-STAR mentioned Transmetropolitan, which is about a rogue reporter living in a dystopia

Couldn't finish it, but some people love Persopolis (growing up in Iran)

"Birth of a Nation", by the boondock's cartoonist, is a very funny satire

What's wrong with strips? That's how I learned to read. And there are some newspaper strips that are far than some of the junk being published in book form.

I already mentioned Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller in my first post on this thread.

.... and there's nothing wrong with newspaper strips.... Calvin and Hobbes is pure genius..... I'm sure Highway-STAR loves some strips just as much as you and I,story645.... it's just that some people think the only form of "western" comics are the newspaper strips.

Lastly... I recommend Kashmir Pending... it's about the conflict in Kashmir, told from both side.... pretty good stuff. Bought it at an International book fair, so it may be hard to find in stores. (it's in English, BTW... I don't read Hindi, either)

House of Mystery. - brand new comic its only at issue three, so there's not much to be said about it yet, but it is good so far.

DMZ - America's in the midst of a civil war and Manhattan is the official DMZ. All of that through the eyes of a rookie reporter.

Zombie Proof - yes, more zombies, but its funny, trust me

just about anything in Heavy Metal magazine

Scott Pilgrim- an OEL, but unlike many others it doesn't feel like you're reading a suck-ass clone of a manga

The Sword - so there's a a sword that was forged by demigods that gives you superpowers and makes you near invulnerable, but its not a super hero comic. Seriously, its awesome.
