realistic sci-fi

i.e., the world is believable (not just physically possible). not that many manga like this i think, but eden, and maybe king of thorns come to mind. Ah, and The Hour of the Mice. Space operas are fine, but, again, i want realism, so no mechs. Try to avoid total bleakness to the stories as well... but i dont want total lightheartedness either
nothing really out there like battle angel alita, gantz, blame or kaiba (anime). (not that i dont like those too- though i only really like gantz & kaiba)

Seikai Trilogy, Seikai no Senki and Seikai no Senki 2 or rather their anime counterparts (all are adapted from a series of novels, though) were great.
