"Ethical dilemma is a complex situation that will often involve an apparent mental conflict between moral imperatives, in which to obey one would result in transgressing another." - Wiki

Have you guys ever encountered any ethical dilemmas in your life? Either serious and/or not, let's hear them out. :]

The latest I could remember was when I ordered something online, and I facetraded with that person in real life. Along with my purchase, she left her brand spankin' new iPad in the bag and she completely forgot about it. I don't even know how... Obviously the right thing to do is to return it. But honestly, there was a 5-second moment where I hesitated. 🤣 I returned it in the end~

And you?

Mental conflict between moral imperatives?

So the idea is that according to a certain set of accepted values, doing something is "good and right", but according to another set of accepted values, not doing so is "good and right", right?

It's like, a bomb is ticking, the terrorist is caught, the authorities don't know how to defuse it. Extract information from the terrorist to save lives or don't torture him because it's inhumane?

Yea I get that a lot.

I keep hearing "be who you are", but people around me don't like "who I am when I am myself" (Yeah maybe I'm a detestable guy 😀 ). Do I "be who I am" or do I follow what I am told? I hear violence isn't the answer, but hey seems pretty effective to me.

Must I follow the interests of those who shape me or my own interests? Is doing one being selfish? Is doing the other being weak?

Sure, the other day I faced a conflict when I got up really early to go to a church with my aunt. Do I tell her that I'm agnostic and don't believe in "the church" and hurt her feelings and make her angry and make myself unhappy or do I go along and conform and make her happy. In the end I decided to conform, because: I chose to live with my family even knowing that they are radical Christians who expect everyone to go to church and I can decide to move out any time. hughhh... 🙄 it's just so convenient though ...

All the time. Life is a great big balancing act that teeters between your personal beliefs and awkward social situations, and when you live overseas from wherever your home country is totally random and expected stuff comes out of the woodwork nearly every day... I once had this very surreal- almost Kafkaesque- argument with a Burmese (Myanmarese?) guy where neither of us could recall exactly what we were arguing about, but both of us (I assume) felt that our entire way of life was being scorned by the other.

In the end I cared less than he did and relented, but that's just the sort of thing I usually end up dealing with. My ethical dilemmas lean more towards peace and stability fighting against effort and self-righteousness, and usually I'm more willing to protect the former just because people often don't care to hear exactly what you think about them. Or at least what I think about them...

You've gotta make yourself happy in the end though. Otherwise it's just not worth it.

i have no ethics, or morals, or even a conscious at that, but i do have this thing that tells me if what i'm doing will make my life easier.

lets say you are on a public bus and there is an old woman next to you, with money not full in her purse.

most people wouldn't take the money because its wrong.

my mind begins processing situation immediately.

  • do i need the money - (need as in i NEED IT not an i could use more)
  • will i get caught - (i usually never make it passed this point if its not less than 20%)
  • if caught would getaway be possible - (it would stop here unless im damn sure of a clean getaway)

thats just an example but its happens enough that i have made the decision to take the money. it was me and someone else alone no cameras and a 20 fell out of their pance, i kept it.

i may have no conscious but having that will this make my life easier thing in my head saves my ass allot of the time.
