Why do they stop growing?
The easiest way to look at this is at retirement. I volunteered in a program for the elderly.
I'd say 85% of the people I know just stop with life. They spend their entire days at home just doing the basic things needed to survive living off their retirement fund. Their doors have 4 different locks on them and they never leave their house and they are always scared. They always talk about the latest crime stories and how the world is becoming scarier every day. When I visit them, it's like they never want me to go away as I'm suppose to provide them with their joy and happiness and safety. Their life is based on the simple routine they created a long time ago. In a way, they look like they are waiting for death to come and take them.
The other 15% though are energetic and never stopped growing. I know one guy who became a dean just because he was bored and is excited with his job. He's one of the most popular professors at school. Another guy is backpacking (yes, backpacking) all over the world and can tell cool stories about the world and stuff. Another one is inventing neat stuff. Another grandpa I know did the stock market and could tell you all about these neat discoveries. These people give you so much energy that you feel like you can't wait to grow old. 😀

Yeah, I used to volunteer at a retirement home. There were many who were like you had described about stopping with life and not really caring. It was always so great to meet those though who had had a wonderful life, and could not wait to keep on living and experiencing more things. Those people were my favorite ones to work with for sure.

It depends.
Most people just want to feel secure, so when they do they just stop doing/trying to do anything else.
Also, when people get older, have a family, demanding work, they don't have time for anything else...
Some people are lucky, maybe they are financially secure or have more relxed professions and can devote time for themselves.
Other people just don't care. Older people for example. Some just live day by day, until they die. Just like that, just because they don't know anything else (and aren't interested because they don't know).
If you mean spesifically about older people, that's because some (as I've said) don't know another way of living.
They sometimes just don't have anything to live for.

LOL yeah i thought he meant literally, so I was going to say "I wonder that too!"
I guess people at certain time of their lives think that they have done enough in their lives and are satisfied with everything? ._. Therefore, they set no goals or whatever and stop?

When I hit retirement (or win big in the bookies)...I plan to watch sports on TV, drink beer, eat red meat, surf the net (and maybe watch grandchildren running around)...does that mean I've stopped growing...if it does...I really don't care...

Maybe they feel that, even if they still have unfinished goals, that it's too late to do them and the only thing left to do is die.
Common sense just isn't that common

Our brain isn't designed to last that long. I think that's also one of the reason why immortality, no matter what kind, will result in insanity. The psychology of the human mind is weak. Lasting any more than 130 years will probably make the poor thing insane.

We use about 10% of it?
You can't say it's "designed" like this, because it's not and we don't even know.
Some people reach to old age with good head and good overall body condition, most don't though.
Some die 95+ with clear mind even some short period time before death.
People need to exercise the brain though.

No, we don't use 10 percent of our brain. We use all of it. It's just parts of the brain are for different functions. When you are hearing something and when you are reading something. These two functions are processed by different brain parts. Every time someone says that, I laugh. 🙂
I can say our brain is designed as such. Evolution proves to me. Evolution is a cold efficient clerk with a calculator. We need to live long enough to procreate. 100 years, fine. So then why would evolution give us a brain that would last 1000 years if we were to die in 100. It doesn't. So there you go. 🙂
