I have decided to start buying some of my favorite manga series but am having trouble finding somewhere that sells them. Right now I am specifically trying to get a complete set of air gear, figure I work on one series at a time. I got lucky today and got 8 of the volumes from a borders that was closing for cheap. But am not sure where else to look other than amazon, borders, and Barnes and noble's website which have a limited selection.

I am also wondering if there is somewhere I can find how many volumes have been published in english. Searching I have only found up to Vol 18 in english. I don't know whether that is all they have right now or if the other 12 volumes are out there and i just can't find them.

This is a pretty helpful site that tells the released volumes and some upcoming ones.

You could always try book stores like chapters,
or you can order them on amazon

Besides Amazon.com and bookstore websites, I ordered from hungrybookworm.com. Their selections are very limited because they sell overstocked books. But it's nice to know that whatever books you buy, a percentage goes to charity. 😀 (yaaaaaaaaaaaay) Oh... a warning -- there's a shipping fee of like... $4.99? (Or maybe $3.99... I can't remember...)

buy.com is another online retail site similar to amazon.com, with more limited selections... but they generally run cheaper... The only thing is, they charge tax (whereas hungrybookworm.com and amazon.com does not). If it's sold by buy.com, you can get free shipping for orders over $25 (like amazon.com).

bookcloseouts.com is another site you can try. I've never purchased any books from here, but it's a good place to start, right?

And naturally, you can always buy manga second hand from the library (if they're "throwing" it out) or used from amazon.com... etc... etc...

NOTE: Click the links I provided for hungrybookworm.com and bookcloseouts.com since I directly linked them to the Graphic Novels - Manga section.

If you want to know how many volumes have been published then check out the publisher's website.

Seems like it's bad news for Air Gear though. Del Rey dropped the project and the other company is closing down at the end of April. Seems like there are only 18 volumes published in English so far.

As for buying them, I usually get mine from a shop called Forbidden Planet, but I think it's only a UK based store. I just use amazon for anything else I can't find there.

After you find out the English publisher of a particular series (this can sometimes be complicated because so many publishers are actually sub-divisions of larger publishers), the publisher's website will usually point you to where you can buy it, or maybe even be selling it right there.

For example Air Gear, though technically published by Del Rey, is found on Random House's website: http://www.randomhouse.com/author/72951/-oh!great?sort=best_13wk_3month

Other than that, you just have to keep your eyes open. I've had luck finding manga in comic book shops and hobby/gaming shops, though I know this is not common.

Cool, thanks for all the help. Even if I can't find all of them at one place, with all of these sites I don't think it will be a problem piecing series together. Thanks, again.

There's one in NY too, huge and very well known shop. I've had mixed luck with brick and mortar stores, though I find the best luck with those are large comic book shops and Japanese bookstores. And far as I've seen, manga's more expensive at the store than from any place online, though I've heard that good deals can be found at conventions. I've found that a shops yaoi collection is a good indicator for the diversity and size of their manga collection.

For example Air Gear, though technically published by Del Rey, is found on Random House's website: http://www.randomhouse.com/author/72951/-oh!great?sort=best _13wk_3month

That's 'cause Del Rey is part of the Random House umbrella. And yeah, I'll second looking at the different series websites.

http://ebay.com might also be a good place, or http://half.com...
Oh and I found this site where you can exchange books and you might be able to get manga from there, I've gotten some books from there, and it's free...

Oh yes... another good search site for media (games, DVDs and books -- including college textbooks): http://bigwords.com It pools multiple search results for you!! I seriously loved this site when buying those cursed, expensive academia books...

Haven't had much luck with these sites, but I saw them tagged in some blogs/how-to's so I guess they're good...http://nextag.com and http://pricegrabber.com
