Can cramps cause people to drown?

I've seen it in countless mangas/animes but have never heard nor seen it happen. I mean, couldn't you just float or something 😕
Anyone? Any thoughts or experiences?

I almost drowned before when I had a leg cramp while swimming in the ocean.
It's not so much about the floating or not but the panic that sets in when you first experience it. You also can't move all that well, and once you start taking in water you're kinda on a fast track down. Leg cramps does freeze you up enough, and if you're a rock in water you're going to drink a lot of water..
With the head just slightly above the waves it's kinda easy to take on water when the cramp sets in, out further enough in the water and you could easily drown if no one notices.
If you're calm enough it's less of a problem but the panic does take you by surprise especially if you were swimming and not just floating on water when it happened. 😐

I've gotten some bad leg cramps before in pools, and i've always been fine. But since I'm not only really tall (could touch the bottom) and an experienced swimmer, it's never put me in danger. I might've panicked if I were dumb, and I can definitely tell you as a lifeguard a kid will go under if his leg cramps in the deep end. The ocean is also a lot more dangerous, too, so I can see cramps being a big problem there.

got 2 leg cramps within a minute of each other, i thought it was a charlie horse, hurt like a bitch, and it was in a pool

You probably could drown if you're at ocean. But, other than that; it hurtz! T.T

There's probably multiple reasons but I get leg and feet cramps if I don't get enough magnesium in comparison to my calcium intake and then stretch a muscle too far. The magnesium lets the muscles loosen up and relax and if I'm lacking the muscles cramp.

i had a cramp during swimming in high school and i was in the middle of the deep end and i started thrashing and sinking. two people had to link hands to draw me toward the side so yes i would say it is possible to drown because of leg cramps

btw someone told me cramps can be caused due to a lack of oxygen...didnt bother to look further into it but it seems plausible

well yeah!! i had that once in sixth grade and i almost drowned...good thing i was in the near end of the pool...in fact it was so bad that my friends have to call my mother because they dont know how to make the pain go away...i dont want to experience that ever again... 🤢

And I think it could make you drown. Since cramps are usually painful, and they'll distract you from properly swimming and you'll start splashing your hands, which in turn makes you unable to float!
