Definitely dumb people, depending on how you define dumb. There's a burden in knowing too much, knowing you could have done this or that, knowing you should be doing this, and generally knowing all the things you don't know, should know, or will never be able to know. Sometimes ignorance can really be bliss -- simple, straightforward life has it's rewards. But again, depends on how you define "dumb" or "smart."

Well, the Oxford Dictionary defines smart as „ able to learn and think quickly“ and „showing good judgment“.
So if we assume that a smart and a dumb person both have the goal of „being happy/contend/satisfied“, then, by definition, the smart person MUST be happier (or happy for a longer time) than the dumb person. If it‘s the other way around, the „dumb“ person is actually the smart one. Since the definitions imply that a smart person will be better able to be happy.

If we‘re talking about general intelligence though… well, emotional and social intelligence are certainly more important than cognitive intelligence (=IQ).

I’m sure a study has tried to answer this for us, but if I had to guess, I doubt it makes much of a difference compared to various personality traits and things like financial security. I do think that people who don’t seek out information (or misinformation) are likely happier, but a dumb person who believes that Bill Gates is trying to inject them with microchips is probably no happier than a smart person following the news about climate change.

I'd say dumb people.
But knowing you're dumb must be terrifying, so concretely dumb people and people who overestimate their intelligence (and never get themselves into a dangerous situation because of it).

I general people who overestimate themselves in certain aspects are usually happy about it.

I must agree with you, I voted thinking on what it would be like for a dumb/smart person in a similar situation to mine (I guess both would be happy and maybe the smarter one would realise how life they're living life on easy mode).

But for the average dumb person is probably conscious about their limits given how hard life is for those unaware, getting cheated ,used ... it must be hell trying stuff you can't achieve , a whole other level of impotence to what a smart person can feel. 😕

Dumb people would be caught up in bad situations though, since they wouldn't realize what happened around them. They might also be easier to be manipulated for other's gain.

But, if we're talking about who's happier, I wouldn't say smart people are happier. They would know what happened around them, and they might know if someone's talking bad about them behind their back. They also know how to act responding certain situations. However, even if they could act ignorant, they still could feel hurt about that.

I know this polling is only for fun, but I don't think I could choose either of them 😂

Salty, as a "smart person" (MIT-educated, do algorithm work for a living, won lots of competitions in high school) who *is* relatively satisfied with his own life, I have to disagree with your take. Not only is this world fucked up enough that sometimes you can do the right things and still lose opportunities (I've led a fairly lucky life, I can admit, but I've seen truly unfair things happen to smart people, which can actually affect them more heavily because they had reason to believe they were acting correctly), but smart people are also thinking constantly about larger global issues that causes very understandable grief and inability to even focus on one's personal successes.

Honestly, I'm unusually good at compartmentalizing (which isn't a "smart people" skill, it's just a thing I can do). Most people I knew at MIT were miserable for a wide variety of reasons, most of which they couldn't reasonably do much about (some of which they could, I admit, but they were also very focused on other things). And many dumb people consider themselves satisfied with life because they are simply ignorant of what they could've otherwise done, while *also* not focusing on broader issues plaguing this awful world (for example, anyone with young kids right now is TERRIFIED of global warming if they're smart, and constantly wondering if bringing kids into the world was even the right call. But if they're dumb they don't care and assume the smart people will work it out).

This has been such a cute exchange

Edit: I followed up on the "call out" and can confirm that I was right all along 😉

Why would a smart person be constantly thinking of global issues? That doesn‘t make any sense. Do you have a source on that? It seems to me you just assume things with no basis in reality.

Also, why would people be terrified of climate change? Unless you live in a 3rd world country, climate change is unlikely to effect you much. Sure, things will change, but change isn‘t inherently bad. It seems you have a very black and white thinking.

Question is hard, because smart people are happier but dumb people are usually more satisfied... (They are satisfied for_all the wrong reasons, but still)

Why do you even want to talk about studies in this case? Haven't you guys heard about reproducibility crisis? It's especially true in soft science disciplines that usually deal with nonsense like the connection of happiness and intelligence.

Some people are dumb and happy, others are dumb and sad, or smart and happy, or smart and sad. It's just the matter what you believe is the correct proportion of those categories. Not to mention, no one is happy all the time. There are sad times.

If you are dumb you are looking at the price of meat and just mad because it increased.
If you are smart, you are looking at the price of meat and realize that's an item that inflates in value fast, how bad is this going to get and will it ever end?

If you are dumb you look at russia and say russia bad
If you are smart you know the resources that they both provide to the things you like doing and are realizing gpus may never go down in price again, we may never have a 'mid range' price gpu

dumb people aren't stupid, they are just taking the world as it is in that moment, while smart people are think several steps farther ahead.
