Dunno really what's my favorite, but why the old ones aren't there? And the other than main series ones. I liked the old ones and the War of the Lions was nice too. The active dimension battle system in XII sucks. I've got it collecting dust because of that.

final fantasy is one of the most diverse games in the history of gaming. lots of different mechanics. of course the newer versions [PS2/PS3 series] have better graphics but that's just what separates the new to the old. each FF series offers something different for its loyal gamers [ahem ^_^]
now for my list [i wouldn't point out graphics since the latter will always be better ^_^]:
FFV - the job system. whoa~! loads and loads of jobs and an additional 4 for the GBA version. nobody beats double weapon and rapidfire. > 🙂 the story is very straightforward you won't get lost XD
FFVII - the materia system. really good, for the skill frenzy type of gamer. XD has lots of combinations to try since there are a bunch of dependent materia that can be combined with either three of materia types [magic, command, summon] the storyline is good but to those that won't pay attention won't get this ><
FFVIII - junction system. now this one i like very much XD having a free reign on which kind of build your characters can have [i.e. physical, magic, defensive] everything that an equipment can do [armors and accessories] magic and junction can do it for you XD the storyline is good as well. i'm a sucker for love stories like this >< and rinoa is just too cute XD
FFT - the first of its kind in the FF universe and by far the best SRPG [strategic rpg] imo. had a bunch of different jobs as well and the myriad of abilities keeps you playing for more JPs XD the story line is very good. i love this kind of plot, war and revenge > 🙂 btw, mustadio's disables is imba and of course who would forget T.G. Cid or more famously known as Orlandu? XD
FFTA - law system. kind of like its predecessor only with a slight twist. you get sent to prison if you break a certain condition in the game. the treasure system and land-make system is a bit new and can be quite a pain if you wanted a 100% game since some of the items can only be gotten from treasures in this system. the story hmm, is aimed for the younger audience imo
FFTA2 - i kind of like this better than the previous TA. same mechanics though but some more revisions and additions and better artwork XD. most items [mostly equipments] are now required to be first crafted before it can be purchased. more jobs by the way. the parivir class reminds me of the gladiator class from FFV gba versions. doing humongous damage with elemental attacks [add geomancy ability for more insane damage XD]
well, these are a few that i would like to share. of course every FF are good. very good in fact and i love them the same as every other FF game. the FF series holds a, how should a say this, special part in my heart. FF will always be a heavy favorite for me XD
Limits are there to be ignored and be broken eventually by someone else

I say X, only because it woke up my sleeping interest for the series again. Hadn't played FF for over two years, so i am grateful for that, but I also love the FFT series, combination of two awesome things + it's portable (at least WotL, A-2, Advance)
Polite bump.
I love it. 'Nuff said. 😎

Then why did you bother necrobumping this thread in the first place? 😕
I like the older ones. (VI and earlier)
Not a fan of 40 hour long cutscenes featuring glowy mannequins that came from shampoo-advert land.

FF8 was my favorite (although FFtactics deserves a honorable mention)
I liked the characters, story, setting and most of all the integrated CG cutscenes. Came close to finishing it (disc3/4) but then lost my saved game 🙁

i Gues number 7 will stay in the classic section...therefore i don't think anythings surpasing it for a while.
number ten is pretty good too, never played 8 so i can't coment on it.

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.

Definitely Final Fantasy II (the PSP ver. is my favorite). I like the story, characters, battle system. Everything! And Mateus is one awesome baddie.
It was great seeing him & Firion in Dissidia again 😀

I like FF VIII and FFVIII the best, but FFVII takes second place because I recently became a graphics snob. (if it was remade with PS3 technology it will be #1 once and forever for me!). FFX was OK and then FFIX I rate near the bottom because it annoyed me to no end that Square purposely made characters short and didn't put innovative graphics for its newest games as it usually does. FFVIII was 2 yrs old and had better character graphics than FFIX!
As for XII,I can't even list it since I didn't finish it because I hated it. I hated the battle system - didn't connect to me at all, once I programmed those actions I just when away from my PS2 and did something else, the game played itself - too impersonal for me! I hated the story that there was no clear main character and the character which supposed to be the hero - Vaan, was the observer and the story pretty much centered around Ash, Balthar and whats his name - disgraced Ash's general and they were the supporting characters! Music was blah!, and while general graphics were good, there were a distinct lack of advanced FMV scenes exept for the beginning. One of the reasons I like FF games is their beautiful FMV scenes which involve characters, all of FFXII major scenes were just regular graphics not FMV mode (other than airships, places, and big explosions) and while FFXII had advanced play graphics for PS2 they still wouldn't compare to good FMVs. And that drop/steal item randomness killed the game for me, While most of FF games had that random aspects for "rare items", it was usually 50% - you played the monster 4-5 times, you get your rare item. For FFXII, it was 10% for rare items, once I spent 2 hrs, killed 30+monsters and still got only 1 required rare item and the weapon I wanted required 5 of these items!
Speaking of music for FF it is noticeably went down in quality, in FFXII there were maybe 2 themes that caught my attention, one for Empire and one for an optional quest for Gilgamesh... I just listened to FFXIII soundtrack and its totally lackluster! Song is meh! and not one rousing score to be had and not even a sound or a chime of classic FF theme even in the beginnig, It is supposed to be a tradition of each and every FF game have at least 1 music score of classic FF theme and this one has NONE! Frankly speaking other than a name I don't consider FFXIII as Final Fantasy material! I have high hopes for FFIII versus, but if it turns out to be same or worse than FFXIII, perhaps this is it for me for FF.
Its sad state of things when a Final Fantasy knock-off with Disney characters - Kingdom Hearts- can claim a much better soundtrack score and entertainment value than an actual Final Fantasy game!

I've played FFI, most of FFII, a little FFVI, FFVII-FFXIII. My vote goes to FFVII. I went on a FF binge recently, before I got my ps3, where I played FFI and replayed FFVII-FFIX. I had lent my cousin FFVII 5 years ago, and when I finally got it back, I went on my third play through (this time completing everything). When I replayed it, my opinion of it grew. I learned to appreciate the story more. I picked up things that I might have been too young to catch, or just didn't really pay attention. The story was complex and cast of characters aresome ofthe best in the FF series. So that holds the top spot... for now.
During this FF binge, I started playing FFVI. Wow is all I can say. The characters are vast and interesting (all of them). Kefka already seemed like a douchebag you love to hate. Thestory looks gripping. I just wish I played more of it. When I complete it, it could very well take the top spot. It'll take a while though. PS3 is taking over my life. xD
Here's how I rank the FF I've played.
- FFVII
- FFVIII - really appreciated the great story on my recent replay, and I always loved the characters.
- FFIX - great story (maybe better than VIII, maybe), but a somewhat weak cast of characters
- FFVI - haven't beat it yet, so I can't rank it very high, but the little I have played ranks it above any PS2 FF
- FFXII - unfairly criticized game (by fans, not critics, they know what's up), interesting story of warring nations, but the characters have little depth (really liked Balthier, though)
- FFX - Not crazy about it like a lot of people, but I can't deny it's a good game. Hated Tidus so much, though. I think Auron is one of the only characters I liked.
- FFII - not a fan of the "lvling" system, but it has a pretty interesting story and some decent characters.
- FFXIII - haven't completed it yet, but 30 hours in and the story still sucks. Weak characters. Only Lightning and Fang are worth a damn, but even Lightning is just a female version of Cloud (developer's words, not mine). A pretty cool fighting system, though. And it sure looks pretty, but graphics fall pretty low on my rating system.
- FFI - rather plain story and the characters had no personality, but it was their first FF so it's pretty good for what it was
Not deserving of rank: FFX-2 - horrible story, horrible script, bad characters (even if cute, Paine was ok, though), but a great fighting system. Such a waste really.
