Mary is 24 years old. Mary is twice as old as Ann was when Mary was as old as Ann is now. How old is Ann?
A) 6
B) 9
C) 12
D) 15
E) 18
Word for word from a SAT math section. I've already solved it (after much sweat, blood, tears, and "help me mommy!"), but I was curious what you guys think. This has to be one of the most confusing word problems I've ever seen in my life. But! It's still only a high school question, so it's not impossible! Any takers? Anyone?

Kill a lot of my brain cells to understand what the question is asking for.

That's not so bad. Don't have to memorize any arbitrary information. You just have to sit down and think about it for a minute or two.
Mary is 24->twice as old as Ann was(12) when Mary was as old as Ann is now
So Ann was 12 when Mary was as old as Ann is now.
The difference between Ann's current age(let's call it X) and past age(12) ->X-12
has to be the same as
The difference between Mary's current age(24) and past age(which is also Ann's current age, X). ->24-X
So
X-12 = 24-X
2X = 36
X = 18
Ann is 18

the most annoying thing about these questions is the time they waste if i you were you i would rule out all the answers i could and guess as fast as i can for example in this q you can easily rule out 15 from the start then you should be able to guess that the answer is probably the larger number

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Nah, it's fine dude. I freely admit that I will always be stupid when it comes to math haha people will always feel impatient about it because math is so heavily involved with how the world works. I have no qualms when people are exasperated about it lol
