I read the manga version, and I found a site that has the film version. I really want to watch it, but I don't think I can handle that much violence in live action. Is the film more or less violent than the manga?

film version sucked, believe me it was terrible. Read the novel version, the first version of the series, almost brought a tear to my eye, the characterization and depth that the author explored each character made me jerk a tear when every char was killed, except the emotionless dude.

All my friends who haven't read it in either format think the first film was amazing, it's annoying. Doesn't do the story any justice, it's just an action movie to entertain people for a few hours. I can't remember how gory it is but if you've seen the manga you'll be fine.

The film version is probably at about the same gore level as the manga, perhaps a little lower.

It does seem to be the case that the film seems much better if you haven't read the manga or novel. It's really not a terrible movie- it's just bad in comparison, since it's primarily an action flick and doesn't get into much character depth, although I thought the ending was a bit more epic than the manga's. Either way the second film is terrible.

As entertainment, it's fine. But if you're watching as a fan of the manga, you might be dissapointed at how the personalities of your favourite characters are ruined or just left out entirely, and how the story is condensed. It has been a while since i saw it so i might be a bit too critical, but i remember thinking at one point "oh, it seems the director has realised he still has 30 people left to kill, and only 20 minutes left to do it in."

I've read the manga, seen the movies (both 1 and 2) and read the novel, in that order.

I have to say that the manga was probably the best version (in my opinion). It told the basic BR story and perfectly graphic (just the right amount of gore) to leave a memorable impression of all the students fates.

The movie was okay, for what it was. The guy that plays Shuuya would later go on to play Light in the live-action Deathnote movies. The movie seemed rushed, but that's the price you pay for taking a pretty thick book/15 volume manga and stuffing it into a 114 minutes. You don't get as much background story for any of the characters except the main players, and the deaths aren't as in depth as I would have preferred.

The book... well it's the original work, so you can't really diss it. My only gripe is that it becomes difficult to keep track of the 42 students, their weapons, what happened so far, and each of their backstories. At least the manga version gives you a face to remember each student by.
Otherwise, I do recommend reading the book if you enjoyed the manga. The basic story is the same, although a lot of details are different. For example, Hiroki's (the martial arts guy) story is pretty damn different from the manga.

ETA: Haven't read the second BR manga series so I can't compare that to the second movie (if they're even supposed to be the same). I do think I enjoyed the second movie more if simply because I didn't have prior knowledge of the story like for the first movie.

Whatever you do, don't read the second manga series. I almost cried because of how awful it was. I'd rather shove a cactus up my ass then read through that piece of shit again.
