I don't watch or read Naruto anymore but seriously, there's something really wrong when the main character is so obsessed with his friend, he doesn't even get a girlfriend and spends his entire time chasing and thinking of him.
It's even worse when you consider their friendship was not deep, inspiring, dimensional: there's nothing to convince me why Naruto is so crazy for Sasuke.
That said, I rarely go into fujoshi mode 'cos man, I just don't bother too much with looking for slash or anything like that and often, I can't see it. Heck, I rarely read doujinshii even.
However, a lot of manga will feature slash simply 'cos they need to attract more readers. Marketing, sales, etc. , after all, Japan takes from America: being heavily capitalist and even manga is seen not as literature but as merchandise. After all, like it or not, in a similar vein, a lot of shounen and even seinen features slashy shoujo-ai. Sooo... why not for manga targetted at females?
