I recently discovered Beastars, Witch Hat Atelier, and Like a Butterfly (Hun) and they were brilliant. So now I'm wondering if there are any other hidden gems that came out in the last five years or so. What I mean by hidden gems are manga/manwha/whatever that are good but tend to have probably less or about 200 or so people reading them on MU, ones that not many people read/know about.

As for what genres and etc, I'm fairly open to anything, though I'm not really looking for shoujo. I do prefer art that looks good, but as you can see from my examples my tastes are eclectic. I think as long as they're fairly unique story-wise or the premise is different from the usual, then I'd be up to reading it.

Astra Lost in Space is pretty criminally underrated. It's a space survival/adventure/conspiracy/comedy story. It's about nine kids who are mysteriously transported to the depths of space 5,000 light years from home, and try to find their way back. I could write on and on about what makes it so good, but you should just try it for yourself.

Not many people are actually reading it, which is a shame because all of its chapters are currently being released for free on Viz's website.

Most people probably don't even know Astra Lost in Space is being released for free and I get why a lot of people aren't reading it after trying to read it. You should definitely add the releases on MU since they're free, but it's still fairly difficult to use the website reader since Viz is relying on Flash and the UI is pretty bad.

Anyway, Astra is pretty cool, the whole airhead Aries turned me off at first but after they got lost the whole story picked up. Thanks for the rec.

I will shamelessly plug Aoi Uroko to Suna no Machi, because I believe everyone should read it smile

That scanlation group does a lot of obscure short things you might want to check out.

Okay so Astra Lost in Space is really good even though there are a few hoops to jump through, it is really good.

Arte looks awesome and just up my alley so I'll give that a look see.

I enjoyed Gakusou from that scanlation group so will definitely give Aoi Uroko to Suna no Machi a try too.

Here's a few that I've been hooked on recently:

Hoankan Evans no Uso
Ninja Shinobu-chan no Junjou
Kine-san no 1-ri de Cinema only if you're a movie buff tho

Sandman - The Dream Hunters

The Chronicle of Myo-Jin lots of mature themes and violence though, but it's amazing

more light hearted side:

Anata no Koto wa Sorehodo quite interesting, deals with all sides of adultery

I try to find obscure new manga of the last five years myself, so... here! Note I tend to be a fan of shoujo and BL though haha.

Escape Journey - a really solid yaoi manga about navigating a closeted relationship in college.
Zero - Kage Miko - well executed manga based off the Fatal Frame video game franchise, somewhat dark as appropriate.
Ryle to Louis - is an upcoming action manga that seems promising form the few chapters I've read.
Colette wa Shinu Koto ni Shita - a heartwarming shoujo about a lady Doctor and the God of the Underworld. Reminds me a lot of Akagami no Shirayukihime. Gives the same feeling.
Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai - a fun shoujo romance about a woman with bad taste in men, coming to fall for her Boss.
Golden Kamui - lots of awards for good reason, great action manga that explores Ainu culture.
Geten no Hana - a simple but enjoyable manga about a kunoichi infiltrating the ranks of Nobunaga and eventually falling in love despite her mission.
Taihen Yoku Dekimashita. - a high school romance that is formed on the basis of being an outcast. The couple becomes friends before lovers too, which I really liked.

These might all be more to my taste than yours, but still! I hope you can enjoy them.

@mikako17 Have you read all of the available chapters yet? Because the latest chapters are really something. (And I ended up adding the chapters to the release section. Thanks for suggesting that).

Also, I second Arte. The only problem with it is that Silent Manga Audition ceased translation of all their titles last year, so we're pretty much left hanging.

The best hidden gems I came across lately are Gunka no Baltzar (six years old) and Grand blue both mangas have an ecsellent writing, characters and art, and are not typical clichè speciments of their respective genres.

Arte apparently only has chapter 1 and 17 available so I couldn't really get into it.

Aoi Uroko to Suna no Machi was so beautiful and just really good.(Also I really love the movement of Tokiko's skirt throughout the manga.)

[Hoakan Evans no Uso] looks kinda hilarious and so does Ninja Shinobu-chan no Junjou, though I don't know if I'll check out Kine-san no 1-ri de Cinema especially since I don't really consider myself a movie buff.

I probably won't read Sandman - The Dream Hunters anytime soon since I stll haven't ready Gaiman's Sandman even though it's been on my to read list for years now. I'm definitely going to read The Chronicle of Myo-Jin and Anata no Koto wa Sorehodo though, they just sound really cool.

I'm not sure about reading Escape Journey from the comments I read, I'm not really okay with reading anything that normalizes rape. I'll check out Zero - Kage Miko especially since I haven't ready mystery/horror in a while. The tag of non-BL with two male leads for Ryle to Louis sounds interesting. I love Greek myths, especially Persephone and Hades so Colette wa Shinu Koto ni Shita is a yes. I like the premise of Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai but the dumb female lead tag is a put off. I've been meaning to read Golden Kamui so thanks for reminding me, but it's definitely not a hidden gem. I haven't read reverse harem in ages and I'm not sure I really want to so maybe not on Geten no Hana. Taihen Yoku Dekimashita sounds a bit too similar to other high school debut shoujo manga so I probably won't check it out.

@calico197 Yes I have and omgomgomg! Astra!!!!! biggrin (And np, now I'll know when a new chapter is available without me having to check the site every day bigrazz)

I really have to catch up on Gunka no Baltzer, I think it's on my Hold list so it's been a while. Grand Blue sounds pretty good though.

Bokura no Fushidara

Palace Meidi it's a shoujo but I think this is quite decent.

I'm playing catch up with all these reccs right now and have only caught up with Ninja Shinobu-chan no Junjou and Hoankan Evans no Uso both of which are hilarious with Shinobu-chan being especially adorable.

Bokura no Fushidara looks good and though I'm not looking for shoujo I'm glad Palace Meidi was recc'd since I kinda adore any kind of manga about history.

I've been hearing good things about The Promised Neverland but am not sure I want to get into it.
