Hmmm I cant fully recommend this one, because I have only watched one episode of it so far, but it does look like its going to get pretty good later on. Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto.

You could also check out the new series Seirei no Moribito.

Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi, This was a very interesting series by studio Bones. It has your sword fights, history,monsters, dimension traveling, gods...and yummy monster meat....

Maybe Basilisk if you want something bloody

Elfenlied I recommend. It definitely is bloody, and it's the best anime i've seen so far. (not that i have seen many...)
