Our member rincewind1990 suggested that we do an IRC poll again. It's been almost exactly 2 years since the last one (with 30.6% not even knowing what IRC is). So 2 years later, how has it declined? For me personally, I almost never log in anymore...

If we ever do this poll again, I'll combine all the IE choices together. Interestingly enough, all the IE votes equal all the Safari votes. And Opera unexpectedly beats both of them, which really surprises me because no one I know uses Opera.

I'm curious about Safari. Does that mean that most of our users don't use Macs? Or does it mean that the Mac users don't use Safari?

Ah the good ol' days of IRC. Now it's pretty hard to find a good place to discuss certain chapters of manga.

used to be downloading from lurk before it's dead
and now, download from there when looking for older release or can't be found via http

but, if there're discussion in the group and it seemed interesting, i usually jump in into the discussion.

no more REALLY chatting using it though.
currently whatsapp, bbm, wechat, line, etc are ruling for chatting world.

I used to use IRC in the past but no longer...

I was between "Have never used IRC before" and 'What is IRC?'. But since I didn't even know what it is (but I see a lot of groups have it, so it must be useful) and only imagined it was some sort of chat (had to google to be sure), I voted "What is IRC?".

Used to, but not anymore, but more likely because I don't really have time to do it anymore.

I used in the past when it was build in in Opera, but they kicked that function out. So I'm not using it any more. Cloud services are a better alternative for downloading manga.

It's also annoying that you need to use separate software for it.

I hope groups will also release more frequently on a website than on irc.

Talking on irc was also really nice, but lately I use the chat box that is build in websites or in an online game. 😎

recently the members of an old forum i used to frequent plus the members of an inactive scanlation group i used to be affiliated with had a reunion of sorts on irc and it was great! 😀 everyone had to re-register their nicknames and everything, the channel itself even had to be re-registered, lol.

i miss irc. it was so useful and fun. i barely have time to log in anymore, even on my phone ;/

I do use it, although as my computer time have went down quite a bit my IRC time is also much less. And sure, it's not as popular as it used to be and many of my favourite channels have long since died. I don't use the modern alternatives to social media.

Last time I download something via IRC channel was in 2008 or early 2009 I believe.
It's been more than 4 years last time I log in IRC.

IRC is still useful, although I usually just lurk and occasionally download via XDCC.
It's somewhat disappointing that so many people don't even know what IRC is.

I'm confused by the people that say they don't have enough time for it anymore since it would seem to me that the normal usage of IRC is to idle 98% of the time and only jump into the conversation as needed (e.g. maybe glance at it a few times a day and send a few messages). You can't really sustain an IRC community without idling like this (this is why jumping into an IRC channel and asking a question like "anyone here?" and then leaving 5 minutes later is so crazy). The only IRC channels that are constantly booming are those with a fresh infusion of unemployed youngsters or those populated by people with relaxed, sedentary jobs (pretty rare in this day).

Of course using what's known as a "BNC" (a "bouncer") will make this most convenient. This allows your IRC session to stay persistent (you never actually leave the network or miss a message) and then you "attach" to that IRC session from anywhere (say through your mobile phone or at work). Once you "attach" you see the IRC client as if you were never disconnected (because in truth you've never actually have). Another option is to setup an ssh server, but that's significantly more complicated.

I use it every day. It's fun to chat with fellow scanlators and readers. It's also very convenient. IRC-only groups are scarce which is really too bad. It isn't difficult to learn, but many find it troublesome. Or they're lazy.

Also, I don't understand people who say they "have no time". Do you read manga on your computer? Do you use FB and other social media? Give me a break.
