Oh for me it has to be when
a) their are no girls, and all male cast. AND everyone is GAY. i expecally hate this when the manga has a tag like ;slice of life' how the hell is that normal?
b) theirs a woman trying to steal the seme -.-'' and shes horrible and nasty to the uke. and the uke spends 20 chapters how hes going to give up, and on the last page, he doesn't -.-'''

Well for the Jews and Muslims i think it might be a cultural thing but most people around the world aren't these days. They had a news story on circumcision recently on tv on where i'm from, apparently only a very small percentage are circumcised these days (in my country) and rarely are there hospitals that will perform the procedure.

There are some really quality yaoi out there with the seme and uke roles. I don't think it takes away from the story being great and/or less valuable. I am not saying that I don't want to see yaoi with reversible couples, but some men just have their preferences in sex positions. Some like taking it up the a$$ and have the greatest orgasm while having a penis inside them and some like putting it in a warm little place. It is just a preference, plus I don't like the thought that just because you are bottom, you are the girly one or the least manly. I sometimes like stable roles because I am used to it and enjoy the names uke and seme. However, there should be lots of different yaoi out there for people with different preferences....well in yaoi lol.

Also, yaoi is usually written by women who relate to stable sex positions so I guess that is why those types of roles were created in the first place.

Sniff.....I like seme and uke.....don't want it to disappear. .

Uke attracts everyone and they rape him
No girls in the manga
Uke always get in trouble and seme always happens to be there to save him
Girly,crybaby uke
The dick just slip into the anus without gel or condom and beforehand preparations
Uke falls in love with the rapist
Popular seme shy uke
Uke gets fucked with no preparations and enjoys it

I think I will mention only those that I dislike, because there is a lot of cliche I actually like so...

  • evil girl/s
  • the popular seme
  • sex everytime, everywhere, every chapter
  • good-for-nothing uke
  • cute uke (everyone likes him, but he thinks the opposite). Also, everyone wants to rape him, but he still thinks it's normal, or that they are making fun or something
  • uke already sleeps with seme, but thinks the seme is doing it for god knows what reason. Then seme has to explain it to uke, but he still can't believe it.
  • everyone is gay (this is in almost all yaoi where there is another character - classmate, best friend, brother... they are everywhere)
  • both of them are in love with each other, without any word from the other one. they have some happy crushes.

There are no bad or good clichés, I think. Most of the times it depends on how the author delivers them, don't you think? Take for instance, how the seme rapes the uke and eventually they fall in love:
it's obnoxiously cliché, yet we accept it better if portrayed with some sort of "reason". Either way, here's a few 🤣 :

"No, stop" actually means: "yes, please do me."
Being a cute dude will get every straight guy on your pants.
Seme totally knows what he's doing even if it's the first time with a dude.
There's no need for lube - let's face it: the uke gets wet everywhere.
No condom.
Everyone is gay or will turn gay for the uke.
Girly, naïve, oblivious, good-for-nothing uke.
Seme is the hottest s-hit in town.
Girls are either evil or arranged to be married to seme/uke; otherwise they don't exist.
It's really easy and quick to pour your heart out and be happily ever after.

As for the seme and uke roles, from a female perspective, I'd say this is the "no-brainer" cliché because it's a matter of sexual identification, that's why they're there for. The more yaoi you read, the more clichés you encounter, the more you want to run away from them. But the seme/uke roles is pretty much a given. I wouldn't mind reading more BL with reversible couples, but could it possibly become the norm? Is that what the average fangirl is looking for when she goes to BL, provided that the yaoi demographics is mostly female? I don't know.

I'd say that in 98% of the cases I feel attracted to the seme (which would make me the uke, 🤣 ) and that kind of connection, I guess, plays a significant part in the reading too...

-I absolutely hate Stockholme syndrome
-When the seme is cold and tsundere-like( I don't like flippy floppy characters unless there is a reason for change )

  • I also hate how nobody seems to use condoms and how nobody cares or mentions it
  • 98% of the whole male population is gay and the 2% remaining just haven't come out of the closet.
  • The uke always says he doesn't enjoy sex
-The uke always forgives everything the seme has done wrong to him
  • Like shoujo manga, the uke always seems to be dumber, less apt, and less sociable than the seme.
  • The uke has the pinkest nipples EVER
As for uke and seme roles, I don't really mind them. In fact, I used to avoid yaoi with reversible couples

Not really a cliche, but it is frustrating when a yaoi starts with the perspective of one main character and then I start liking that character and then the author suddenly changes the perspective to another character and I realize that that person is the main main character. I then have to force myself to start liking that character or else I wouldn't be able stand reading it. You know how when an animal just hatches or births and then gets the impression that the first animal he/she sees is its mom? And then it finds out that the person he/she thought was his/her mom wasn't his/her mom? Well I feel like that is happening when I read these types of mangas. Make sense?

this isn't the most annoying cliche, or even that common. but i hate when there is a straight best friend or co-worker of the main character who ends up in a gay relationship in the extra or side story. i like the premise of an understanding straight friend, and the fact that the gay characters can find someone who can be supportive. i wish that they could just stay straight. but it seems like in a yaoi, every guy has to end up in a gay relationship.

but that leads me to another pet peeve of mine, the story where every character is gay. like when the story is an all-boys school that switches between multiple gay couples as the protagonists. it just takes away from the realism (if there is any to begin with) when every character is gay.

As much as I like yaoi with one or both having kids, the fact that 99% of the time, those kids somehow end up being gay also irritates me. I mean yeah, maybe some of it is hereditary or a response to your living environment so I expect some to be but not all of them. I can only remember one yaoi named Complex where his kid ends up marrying and having kids.
