The COICA Act (IMPORTANT FOR U.S. CITIZENS)

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.
If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.
For more info on this act, check out The Huffington Post's article about it, And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition (DemandProgress.org - Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!)
Also for US citizens, you can email your Senator from the following link and tell him or her your concerns about this bill (Tell Your Senator: No Website Blacklists, No Internet Censorship!
Normally I wouldn't be worried about things like this, but seeing how the entertainment and media corporations are behind this, as well as the fact that they have some people in the Senate and Congress on their side, there's a strong chance that this could pass.

the senate don't give a damn about the people that elects them.
Reason is simple, they don't know the people, who they do know is thhe rich companies that give them money for elections and whatever else.
while the pople can only not elect him once in a while, a big company can make life difficult every single day.
So unless passing this bill is not what they intended, then it will pass
side note does this mean no scans?

Yes, seeing how scanlation sites would be counted as some of the sites that are "dedicated to infringing activity".

Check the date on the original post - it's from the end of September. Since then, the bill has been shelved although it looks like they're still trying to get ISP's to voluntarily do something similar to what the bill proposed.

That's no reason why I shouldn't still spread the word, especially seeing how they're still trying to get ISP's to do something similar, as you just said. Besides, just because it's shelved doesn't mean that it's automatically done with, they can bring it back up again.

i think scans will take a less and less role in the world anyways.
After all it is illegal. It's just not an issue right now cause the industry isn't that big. But wait till it's as big as gaming.

Because it's not like there's free copies of games floating around on the internet 🙄

To tell you the truth, losing the ability to go to scanlation sites is the least of my worries. There are way more important sites on the net that will be blocked just because of that "sites dedicated to infringing activity" technicality.

Repeat thread: see here.
Now, I get that we of the internet generation (for lack of a better term) have a bit of an entitlement complex, but I do think there's something we need to think about here. The goal is, in essence, to prevent illegal activity. Now, I'm just about as liberal as they come, so I'm really not advocating any sort of secession of civil liberties, but at the same time I want to remind us that we really don't have much moral ground to stand on. Being on this site, and well, using the internet, pretty much guarantees in this day and age that we all pirate occasionally. I don't particularly see what's wrong, on a moral level, with attempts to illegal activity more difficult. It's just a matter of execution.
